Supermarkets slash cost of diesel and unleaded
Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons have announced fresh cuts at the pumps.
Yet another supermarket fuel price war has broken out between Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.
Tesco was first to announce it was cutting the price of diesel by 2p per litre and unleaded by 1p per litre on Friday (7th August) across its network of 500 filling stations.
Sainsbury’s and Asda dropped their prices on both petrol and unleaded too on Saturday.
Sainsbury’s reduced the cost of diesel by up to 2p per litre and unleaded by 1p per litre across its 300 forecourts.
Asda is matching rivals and reduced the price of diesel by 2p a litre and unleaded by 1p per litre. The supermarket applies a national cap across its forecourts and says motorists will pay no more than 108.7p per litre on diesel and 111.7p per litre on unleaded.
Finally, Morrisons announced on Monday (10th August) that it was cutting the cost of diesel at its forecourts by up to 4p per litre.
Price cuts
Last month motorists enjoyed a string of price cuts at the pumps, which saw the cost of diesel fall below unleaded for the first time since 2010. According to an RAC spokesman the average cost of diesel fell by 5p a litre July, saving £3 when filling up.
Now it seems August could follow suit with more cuts on the cards.
Simon Williams from the RAC said: “With oil prices just under the $50 a barrel mark, there’s every chance even more cuts are just around the corner. And, if oil stays low and wholesale diesel remains abundant, we could even have a chance of seeing £1 a litre diesel.”
