Supermarkets cut the cost of petrol and diesel

Updated on 13 September 2013 | 15 Comments

Petrol prices are falling again at two of the leading four supermarkets from today.

Asda is cutting the price of petrol by up to 2p a litre and diesel by up to 1p from today.

The price cut fits into the supermarket's national price cap, so no one will pay more than 133.7p per litre for petrol or 138.7p for diesel.

It claims that after the price cut the average household could save more than £45 per year by using its petrol stations compared to the most expensive suppliers.

Supermarket price war

Tesco followed suit and said it will be dropping the price of petrol and diesel in some sites by up to 2p from today. But it did not confirm which sites would be affected.

Morrisons has confirmed it will not be making any changes to its petrol prices, while Sainsbury's has yet to respond.

Back in June we reported on another supermarket pricing war which started with Asda cutting prices by up to 2p. This was shortly followed by similar announcements from the other big three supermarkets.

Petrol prices lottery

Average petrol prices have risen by almost 3% in the past three months to 137.5p in August, according to the AA.

But although news of petrol prices going down is positive, it doesn’t address the problem of the postcode lottery.

Throughout the UK drivers are paying significantly different prices depending on where they live. Prices can vary by up to 3p in some areas depending where you fill up.

Those in small towns are being worst affected with some facing increases of up to 5p a litre since June.

How to save money on petrol

There is no way to avoid rising prices but individually you can make some small changes to cut the price you pay on petrol.

The internet is full of information and advice and the website PetrolPrices.com will show you the cheapest places to fill up in your neighbourhood.

Avoiding motorway service stations, keeping your car in good condition, and removing any unnecessary weights will also help.

centrum46 - thanks for your sentiments, but you failed to do the maths as I did manage to get a decent reduction on the fill up of 55 litres of our larger car a week or so before the 5p reduction on filling our smaller car. £11 voucher reduction on 55 litres = 20p per litre, albeit before the latest so-called price reductions. Sometimes vouchers do coincide with our periodic fills, and no additional mileage cost to get best deal as fill up is where we shop. Just need to remember to take the car that needs the largest fill. Best fillip to mercenary inclination in past was a total of 25p vouchers per litre on 60 litre fill. Slightly nervous due to reliance on remaining range on info screen, and whether or not it was as accurate as range quoted.

Rebecca says..."Prices can vary by up to 3p in some areas depending where you fill up". Up to 3p a litre - on a price of up to £1.40 - that's not nearly enough to make me consider going out of my way. As others have already remarked - the savings would buy you next to nothing. So what would make me go out of my way? At least 10p a litre, and then it would have to be a tankfull. The excise duty and VAT account for the larger proportion of the cost - so there isn't a lot of room for much of a change. A reporter in the USA interviewed people in the street on the cost of "gas" in the UK - they think we are completely nuts! However they DO NOT enjoy a free health service. If you add on the cost of healthcare insurance you will find that their price isn't all that different - something the reporter failed to mention.
