The best all-round credit cards

If you don't want to carry more than one credit card, here are some that offer a mix of benefits, particularly if you're looking to spend overseas.

Not everyone wants to carry several credit cards or go to the effort of switching every year or so.

Luckily, there are a few cards on the market that are good for more than one purpose, for example earning cashback and not being charged for purchases made overseas.

Let's take a look at some of the top all-round credit cards.

Capital One Aspire World

The Capital One Aspire World card pays 0.5% cashback each year on an annual spend of up to £6,000, 1% from £6,000 from £10,000 and 1.25% on £10,000 upwards. There's no limit on the cashback you can earn. It also offers commission-free purchases abroad.

Nationwide Select

The Select card is only available to new or existing Nationwide current account customers. It offers 0.5% cashback on all purchases made in sterling and doesn't charge commission fees for use overseas. Right now, it's also one of the top 0% balance transfer credit cards, as it offers 26 months with no interest to pay on debt for a low 2.4% balance transfer fee.

Halifax Clarity Rewards

This card is somewhat hidden away in the Halifax cupboard, as you can only apply for it in branch. You also need to be a Halifax current account customer. If you're a Current Account or Reward Current Account customer, you need to pay in at least £1,000 a month to your account qualify (Reward Current Account customers will earn £5 a month for doing this, so long as they also have two direct debits set up from their account and stay in credit). If you're an Ultimate Reward account customer you qualify automatically.

You can earn £5 a month cashback from the Clarity Rewards card, so long as you spend at least £300 on your card a month. And there are no charges for overseas usage.

Aqua Advance

The Aqua Advance card is a particularly good option if you have a poor credit history but want a card to use abroad. When you first take out the card, the interest rate will be high at 34.9%. But if you can demonstrate you can make your payments on time, you can cut that down to 19.9% in just three years. Ideally, you'll be paying your balance off in full and not being charged any interest.

It also charges no fees on overseas spending.

Tesco Clubcard for Purchases

If you don't want or need a credit card for overseas spending and you shop regularly at Tesco, the Clubcard for Purchases could be a good option. It's currently offering a market-leading 18 months with no interest to pay on purchases, plus you earn extra Clubcard points on your spending. You earn five points for every £4 you spend on shopping at Tesco and at Tesco petrol stations. You also earn one point for every £4 spent elsewhere.
