Tesco launches Clubcard Fuel Save discount scheme

Tesco shoppers can now earn money off fuel as well as Clubcard points.

Tesco is launching a new Clubcard Fuel Save scheme, which will allow regular shoppers to save money on fuel at Tesco petrol stations.

For every £50 spent at Tesco in a month, either in-store or online, you will receive 2p off per litre of fuel the next time you fill up at a Tesco petrol station. This can be used immediately or saved until the end of the next calendar month. So you can wait until you’re making a big fuel purchase to make sure you get the biggest discount possible.

The maximum amount anyone can redeem is 20p off per litre, but to earn that you need to have spent £500 over a month in Tesco. You must make sure you swipe your Clubcard every time you spend to ensure you earn your points.

Any discount you earn will be in addition to your normal Clubcard points. That means people with a Clubcard credit card can earn double Clubcard points plus the money off fuel.

Good news for Tesco regulars

There are two good things about this scheme. The first is it’s done via your existing Clubcard, so there’s no need to worry about vouchers. Your discount is simply swiped from your Clubcard when you pay for your fuel.

The second is you can accumulate your fuel saving over the course of a month. So if you spent £50 on one visit and then £25 apiece on two subsequent visits, you would still have earned 4p off per litre of fuel.

This is in contrast to the fuel saving schemes that have been operated by supermarkets up until now, which have always required a minimum spend, usually of at least £40.

Of course, this scheme will only be work for you if you have a Tesco petrol station nearby and its fuel is competitively priced.

The Clubcard Fuel Save scheme is running from now until 30th September.

I find this offer very unfair . . . I am able to earn fuel points at an Esso petrol station but am unable to redeem the points when purchasing fuel at Esso . . . I have no Tesco fuel outlets in my area so to redeem points I would either have to take a ferry crossing (across the Thames) or drive into Kent! It is especially galling when the promotion was made such a big thing of at my local Tesco store! For those unable to redeem the fuel saving with their points Tesco should offer vouchers as the fuel points just get wiped if they are not spent!

One thing not made at all clear about this promotion is the list of exclusion which apply. Anyone with a Tesco Clubcard will know that certain purchases are excluded from earning clubcard points e.g tobacco products and mobile top-ups. I assumed that exactly same exclusions would apply to purchases which would qualify for Fuel Save points - wrong. I reckoned I had earned at least 4p per litre discount and possibly close to 6p but my receipts only showed 2p which I queried with customer services. I was shocked to discover that basically only "grocery" purchases count towards these points. Spend money on fuel, clothing, electrical (all of which qualify for the regular clubcard points) and those purchases don't count. The promotional leaflet does say in TINY print that exclusions apply but it doesn't list them. Visit the website and you still won't find them obviously displayed. Click on "terms and conditions" and finally there they are! The other thing you may want to consider is keeping your own record of your total spend on qualifying goods in any given month. You could reach the last day of one month and your latest receipt may tell you you have earned 4p per litre discount which must be claimed the following month. What it won't tell you is that perhaps it may only take another 1p spend and you would jump to the 6p per litre level. If you have a Tesco Clubcard and normally buy groceries and fuel there anyway then this scheme is a bonus of sorts but you really have to have your wits about you to make the most of it.

sampeters said: "whereabouts in Wales is it £1.14 a litre for diesel?" That's £1.14 with the afforementioned money off. Meanmachine2 said: "I wouldn't even put Tesco petrol into next doors car." I can't speak of their diesel as I don't use it but their "Momentum 99" is quite good, makes the car feel a bit more "peppy". And I don't even drive a car that can make full use of 99RON petrol.
