Treasure hunt for free cash this weekend

A US treasure hunt for hidden cash is coming to London this weekend. Could you strike it lucky?

What would your reaction be to finding a hundred pounds stuffed inside an envelope?

This weekend, you might be able to find out.

A millionaire from California started a large-scale treasure hunt in the USA last month, by hiding cash-filled envelopes around San Fransisco. The people behind the operation were revealed to be real-estate investor Jason Buzi and a few well-off friends, who now plan on hiding 20 envelopes around a “large park” in central London on Saturday.

Twitter clues

When the money has been hidden, hunters will receive clues via Twitter. You can find the team on the handle @HiddenCash.

The envelopes are expected to contain around £100 each. Commenting from the above handle, HiddenCash administrators stated that they had "BIG plans for London. Lots of money coz a pound is worth almost two dollars."

Though some other Twitter users have criticised the hunt, as the money isn’t necessarily going to the most needy, Mr Buzi justified organising HiddenCash, saying to The Telegraph that he does donate money to charity, but "HiddenCash is not about charity, it’s a fun game that brings people together that happens to involve money.”

Many winners have gone on to donate the money to charity, or use it for other good deeds.

So far, HiddenCash treasure hunts have taken place in Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Mexico City. They have caused some trouble due to overexcited crowds, but no real damage.

More hunts are expected to follow in other European cities like Madrid and Paris.
