She instantly fell in love with the tranquil 42-acre property and began persuading the owners, Robert and Marlene Veloz, to sell her their home. Although it wasn't on the market at the time, the couple couldn't refuse the $52 million (£41m) that Oprah offered them. The compound included the aforementioned mansion, a guesthouse and various outbuildings.

George Clooney’s Lake Como mansion, Italy: $100 million (£80.8m)
While the purchase price of George Clooney’s Lake Como mansion has not been officially released, The Richest reported that it cost the movie star a (relatively) modest $13.5 million (£10.8m), back in the early 2000s. Today, it's worth a whopping $100 million (£79m)—the most highly valued asset in Clooney's impressive property portfolio. It’s little wonder the Clooneys spend so much time at this property, with its 25 rooms, its copious walk-in closets and its indoor gym and tennis court, with a swimming pool for cooling off afterwards. What’s more, the American actor has been recently appointed an honorary citizen by the municipality. How’s that for love from the community?

Although the mayor of Laglio issued a restricting order stopping fans and the media from approaching their home—with fines of up to €500 (£427/$540) for coming within 100 metres of the property—the Clooneys did open up their home to the public in 2019. The charitable pair created a sweepstake with online fundraising platform, Omaze, where winners would enjoy a lunch date with the couple at the villa, raising money for the Clooney Foundation for Justice.

Pierce Brosnan's oceanfront estate: $100 million (£80.8m)
Pierce Brosnan’s majestic Malibu mansion couldn’t be more different from Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s pad. The 90s movie star bought the land for the Thai-inspired, oceanfront compound in 2000 before spending 10 years transforming it into a tranquil haven, with its lush gardens and Japanese-style spa. The Mamma Mia star listed it in 2020 for $100 million (£79m) but the property languished on the market and he now seems to have had second thoughts about letting it go…

The iconic actor certainly has as much style as his on-screen persona, James Bond. Known as Orchid House, the billionaire bolthole was completed in 2010, ten years after Brosnan purchased two lots of land for just shy of $10 million (£8m). Secured behind carved teak entry gates, the waterfront villa benefits from panoramic coastal views from almost every room. Chic and sophisticated, the resort-style property is finished with the finest materials for a truly exceptional finish.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Brutalist Malibu mansion: $200 million (£159m)
The ultimate power couple, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have a reported combined net worth of $2.5 billion (£2bn), so it’s no surprise they have a stellar property portfolio to match. Their most recent purchase, a concrete mansion in Malibu however, has blown all their other homes out of the water. The architectural gem cost $200 million (£159m) and is said to be the most expensive home ever sold in California, and the second-most expensive property deal in US history.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Brutalist Malibu mansion: $200 million (£159m)
Believe it or not, the 30,000-square-foot compound was a bargain for the pair, who received a 30% discount from the owners, who were originally asking a whopping $295 million (£235m) for the unique building. The iconic structure is one of the few American residences designed by the revered Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The home reflects his signature concrete monolithic style and includes an ornamental reflecting pool – a feature that has become one of the architect’s calling cards.

Known as the Bell House, the Brutalist-style structure was commissioned by Bill and Maria Bell in the late 1990s and took over 15 years to complete. The couple are among the world’s most prolific art collectors, and the house was commissioned in part to house their large modern art collection, which includes works by Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea though and has drawn comparisons with a James Bond villain’s lair.

One of its wow-factor features is the expansive terrace of polished concrete overlooking the ocean. But despite the home’s unique design, it’s not the only Ando masterpiece in the area. Back in 2021, one-time close friend of Jay-Z, rapper Kanye West purchased another Malibu residence by the famed architect, which shares similar characteristics.
