Born on 19 March 1955 in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, Bruce Willis is the patriarch of the showbiz dynasty.

Willis launched his acting career in the early 1980s with minor roles in TV shows including Miami Vice and The Twilight Zone.

His big break came when he scored the lead role in the ABC detective series Moonlighting, which he starred in between 1985 and 1989.

In 1987, his stellar performance as investigator David Addison Jr. saw him earn both the Emmy for Outstanding Lead in a Drama Series and the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series.

Willis is arguably best known for playing John McClane in the Die Hard franchise. He earned a cool $5 million for the first instalment in 1988, which equates to around $13 million (£9.8m) today.

His salary for the 1990 sequel jumped up to $7.5 million, and he received a staggering $15 million for 1995’s Die Hard: With a Vengeance. For the final two movies, 2007’s Die Hard 4.0 and 2013’s A Good Day to Die Hard, he earned an incredible $25 million.

This means Willis has banked a grand total of $77.5 million from the action-packed franchise – or around $101.6 million (£82m) when factoring in inflation. 

While it might be hard to believe, John McClane isn’t actually Willis’s most profitable movie role. He actually earned his juiciest salary playing Malcolm Crowe in the 1999 low-budget horror movie The Sixth Sense.

The star earned an upfront fee of $14 million for the project – or $26 million (£20m) when inflation-adjusted – and also negotiated himself a 17.5% share of the box office takings.

The savvy deal paid off when the indie flick became an unexpected hit, grossing an inflation-adjusted sum of $1.3 billion (£980m). Willis ultimately took home $114 million for his performance, or a jaw-dropping $215 million (£162m) in today’s money.

As well as being Willis's most lucrative movie role, his astronomical salary from The Sixth Sense is the single highest Hollywood payday of all time.

Willis’s follow-up album, If It Don’t Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger, was released in 1989, though he ultimately put music on the back burner to focus on his movie career.
