New £5 coin set commemorates First World War
The Royal Mint has launched a new series of commemorative coins to mark the centenary of the First World War. The first set of six coins commemorates the outbreak of war in 1914.
This coin features a portrait of Walter Tull (1888-1918). He was raised in a children's home following the death of his parents. He became a footballer, playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town. His football career went on hold when he was called up. He later became the first black British officer to lead white soldiers. He was killed in battle in March 1918.
This coin shows the British Expeditionary Force, which was sent to France at the beginning of the First World War.
This coin commemorates the Royal Navy's role in the war.
This coin commemorates those who kept Britain running on the Home Front.
This coin depicts Howitzer guns, although none of the British versions were completed in time to be used in battle.
Finally, this coin depicts two propaganda posters. You’ll notice one is encouraging people to lend their savings to the Government. All six of these coins have been struck in 925 sterling silver (so 92.5% pure silver).
The Royal Mint is issuing one commemorative set a year until 2019. This first one costs £450 and can be bought from the Royal Mint website at www.royalmint.com All photos copyright of the Royal Mint
