Supercars, luxury watches, and fine art aren't the only hugely expensive things celebrities collect. With plenty of cash to indulge their every whim, A-list stars can afford to fuel any obsession they may have, be it with Superman, ancient coins or even typewriters.
We take a look at the quirky and extravagant collections of the rich and famous.
A huge comic book fan, the actor Nicolas Cage – real name Nicolas Kim Coppola – actually took his acting surname from the Marvel superhero Luke Cage, aka Power Man. He has spent years amassing one of the world's most valuable collections of rare titles.
The collection was auctioned in 2002 for a cool $1.6 million (£1.17m). Cage's most prized comic book, a mint copy of Action Comics #1, featuring Superman's debut, was stolen in 2000 but found in a San Fernando storage locker in 2011. It went on to sell for $2.1 million (£1.5m).
Cage missed out on playing the superhero in Tim Burton's cancelled Superman Lives but did get to voice the character in 2018's Teen Titans GO! To The Movies. The same year, Cage also voiced Spiderman in Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse.
Staying with Superman, Shaquille O'Neal appears to be just as obsessed with the Man of Steel as Cage. O’Neal’s main career encounter with superheroes was as the lead actor in the 1997 action movie Steel – and with stardom came the opportunity to gather his own collection of comic book hero paraphernalia…
As well as Superman being one of his nicknames, Shaq has everything from a Superman tattoo on his left arm to a swish Superman-branded SUV (pictured), bed, carpet, diamond ring... You name it, he has probably got it.
When it comes to hoarding cult action figures, Leonardo DiCaprio was once up there with the planet's most compulsive collectors.
However, the Oscar-winning actor put part of his collection up for sale in 2006. The lots included 150 Star Wars figures, featuring a $4,500 (£3.3k) Vinyl Cape Jawa.
A veritable treasure trove for any child of the 1980s, He-Man, E.T., and characters from The A-Team also went under the hammer. The sale raised a total of $110,000 (£80.7k), which was donated to DiCaprio's charitable foundation.
Mila Kunis gives Leo a good run for his money in the collection stakes. The actress, who got her big break starring alongside Natalie Portman in 2010 movie Black Swan, has a not-so-secret passion for Star Trek, and owns an enviable collection of memorabilia from the show.
The die-hard Star Trek fangirl has been hooked on the show since her teens. She has an impressive collection of vintage Star Trek figures that were gifted to her by fellow famous Trekkie Jason Segel, as well as a signed photo of Leonard 'Spock' Nimoy.
Mila Kunis may treasure her signed Spock photo but actor and comedian Ben Stiller can go one better. The Zoolander star and devoted Trekkie has a pair of original Spock ears, courtesy of Leonard Nimoy himself (pictured).
Other highlights of Stiller's Star Trek collection include a complete Gorn head mask he picked up for $27,500 (£20k) in March 2006. Stiller is also believed to own the colossal Starship Enterprise model used in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
In strong contention for the creepiest celebrity collection, Demi Moore owns thousands of antique porcelain dolls.
The Ghost star owns so many of the dolls, in fact, that she bought a separate house in which to store the bulk of her collection.
Moore's ex-husband, Ashton Kutcher, who is now married to Trekkie Mila Kunis, was freaked out by the collection, and was particularly spooked by the dolls in the couple's bedroom, which he thought were staring at him.
It was reported in 2019 that Moore insured her spooky collection for a whopping $2 million (£1.46m).
Think of a celebrity Hermès Birkin bag collector and a fashionista such as Victoria Beckham is likely to spring to mind, not a rapper like Drake.
Yet the Toronto-born actor turned hip-hop artist really does own a collection of Hermès arm candy.
In 2017, the music star revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he collects the bags, which retail for up to $500,000 (£367k) a pop, for "the woman [he'll] end up with".
The reasoning? Birkins are among the "few tangible things in this world that hold their value", and have actually outperformed the price of gold in the last 35 years. Now all Drake has to do is find the lucky lady...
Much like Drake and his Birkins, Sylvester Stallone might seem an unlikely candidate to collect rare books.
However the macho action star has a library of thousands of rare titles, including first-edition works by Charles Dickens, Jonathan Swift, and Voltaire.
Stallone is, of course, a seasoned scriptwriter, having penned the screenplays for four of the Rocky movies, among others.
In 2017, he put 1,000 volumes of his book collection up for sale, netting tens of thousands of dollars.
One of the world’s most admired directors, Quentin Tarantino has brought film fans classics including Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, as well as the Kill Bill movies.
Fittingly, the Hollywood legend’s love of cinema also spills into one of his hobbies: collecting board games related to films and TV shows.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine in 1994, Tarantino showed off some of his favourite games, including The Dukes of Hazzard and Dawn of the Dead.
The director originally started off by trying to collect lunchboxes, but found them to be expensive for what they were. He then gave serious thought to collecting dolls but didn’t like that they had to be kept in their boxes. Vintage board games can be worth a small fortune – and they can be played with, too.
Kiefer Sutherland has been an avid guitar collector since childhood. “Some people collect cars or art, for me guitars are that. They are beautiful works of art,” he said in an interview with Guitar in 2019.
The British-born Canadian actor owns numerous acoustic and electric guitars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and is especially fond of vintage Gibson models. In fact, Gibson has even produced a guitar inspired by the 24 star.
Sutherland doesn't just collect the instruments and stash them away. He is a consummate guitar player, evidence of which can be heard on his debut album Down in a Hole, which was released in 2016.
He has slimmed his collection down to about 20 guitars, as he felt the others were being 'wasted' by not being played regularly.
Metal is Brad Pitt's collecting passion. Alongside his pricey collection of stainless steel Rolex watches and many chrome motorcycles, the Hollywood actor is a great admirer of metal art and furniture, splurging millions of dollars over the years on tonnes of unique pieces.
Pitt is no mere collector. He also has a talent for designing metal pieces, including a metal-heavy furniture collection in collaboration with Frank Pollaro, as well as the wedding rings he and his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston wore.
Sculpting is also said to have been Pitt’s go-to hobby after his split from Angelina Jolie in 2016.
Nicole Kidman has won scores of top awards for her acting but the US-born Australian star actually prefers old coins to shiny statuettes. Believe it or not, Kidman is reportedly a collector of ancient money.
The numismatics aficionado is said to own an extensive collection of coins and has a particular penchant for coins from Judea (ancient Palestine), which can be worth mega bucks.
For example, an unidentified collector from the US snapped up this 1st-century silver shekel coin for $1.1 million (£807k) in 2012.
Sir Elton is a renowned collector. In 2016, the veteran singer-songwriter loaned part of his enormous collection of 20th-century photographs to the Tate Modern gallery in London.
Anyone who has seen Sir Elton may also have realised that the star has a major thing for glasses, too…
Sir Elton owns at least 250,000 pairs of glasses in all shapes and sizes, from jewel-encrusted designs to John Lennon-style shades. The music titan has a walk-in wardrobe specially for his glasses, and once requested a separate hotel room for them when he was on tour.
n September 2020, Sir Elton released his own Barbie doll, styled in his likeness and rocking, naturally, an excellent pair of glasses.
Hell-raising Hollywood star Charlie Sheen is one of the world's most notable baseball memorabilia collectors.
His hoard of Babe Ruth mementos is thought to be worth millions of dollars, and includes a signed baseball worth $2.6 million (£1.9m).
In 2017, Sheen put two of his most cherished pieces up for auction: the 1919 contract of Ruth’s sale from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees, and the iconic player's 1927 World Series ring.
Both items smashed records, earning the actor a staggering $4.3 million (£3.15m).
Former The Tonight Show host Jay Leno boasts an impressive car collection. His assemble of 286 vehicles is worth a staggering $50 million (£36.7m).
The enviable collection includes a 1994 McLaren F1 Redux, a 1928 Bugatti Type 37a, and a priceless 2016 Ecojet, to name just a few. Leno bought his first car at just 14 years old, with his obsession developing from there.
A major model railway enthusiast, Rod Stewart has one of the world's most impressive sets. The singer has had plenty of people laugh at his hobby but that hasn’t put him off his creation, which he has been working on for an incredible 24 years…
Modelled on post-war New York and Chicago, the train set spans 1,500 square feet in the attic of his Los Angeles home. The mega-rich rocker is so mad about his model trains that he even booked extra hotel rooms so that he could continue to build additional scenery like skyscrapers when he was on tour. Stewart built around 90% of the super city himself, calling in additional help when it came to the electrical elements.
He has also been featured on the cover of Model Railroader magazine, which he said: "means more to [me]... than to be on the cover of a music magazine".
Rob Kardashian, along with siblings Kourtney, Kim and Khloé, became recognised worldwide after his part in hit reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
When he hasn’t been gracing the small screen, Rob has been honing his collection of rare sports cards, which has recently had an exciting new addition…
A late-night shopping spree in October 2020 saw Rob snap up a case of 2020 Panini Mosaic Choice cards. As the reality star couldn’t get down to his regular store – The Bullpen in Los Angeles – he asked them to open it up on his behalf, live on Instagram. There were some rare American football cards inside, including one of Justin Herbert and a Joe Burrow collectable.
However, the real gem was a Tom Brady (pictured) card. Experts have estimated that the card could be worth up to $250,000 (£183k), which is quite the profit given that Rob likely paid around $13,000 (£9.5k) for the entire case. It just goes to show that collecting cards can be a lucrative business.
Lots of kids take an interest in creepy crawlies but for German model and actress Claudia Schiffer, her love of tiny creatures stretched into adulthood, too.
Schiffer shares her Tudor home, Coldham Hall in Suffolk, England (pictured), not only with husband Matthew Vaughn and their children but also swathes of dead critters.
Real beetles and butterflies decorate the walls, as well as insect-inspired artwork. It’s rumoured that Schiffer has around 900,000 types of insect displayed in her home. The model also released a knitwear line in 2011 and, perhaps unsurprisingly, the logo was a spider.
Tom Hanks is best-known for his iconic acting roles in films such as Forrest Gump, Castaway, and Toy Story, but he also likes to take time to write.
Hanks won’t settle for a laptop or notebook though; rather, he enjoys the artistry of a good old-fashioned typewriter.
Speaking to The Times, Hanks revealed that he received his first typewriter aged 19 and spent the following decades acquiring more and more. He even featured in a documentary called California Typewriter, where he talked about his obsession. In recent years, the actor reportedly decided to whittle down his collection to just one, yet in November 2019 he was still in possession of around 120.
Hanks’ passion hasn’t just brought typewriters into the 21st century physically. Hanx Writer is an app created by the Hollywood legend that allows users to write out messages in a typewriter font.
An eccentric collector, Johnny Depp is into all sorts of bizarre things. The enigmatic actor plays with Barbie dolls to prep for movie roles and has a collection to die for, including special-edition Marilyn Monroe, Beyoncé, and High School Musical Barbies.
Barbies aside, Depp's most cherished collection is his treasure trove of Jack Kerouac memorabilia. The actor owns a number of items that once belonged to the Beat Generation writer, including a suitcase, raincoat, and various manuscripts.
Sometimes collections are based on an obsession, while others stem from a longer, and sometimes sadder, history.
British comedian and TV host Jonathan Ross has said he missed out on the more expensive toys his school friends had. He has certainly made up for lost time as an adult though!
Ross is now thought to have one of the largest toy and comic book hoards in Britain. The multi-millionaire has used his collection for good – in 2009 he auctioned off a 1962 Spider-Man comic, a copy of Amazing Fantasy (pictured), which was the first to feature the superhero, and raised £40,000 ($54.5k) for the UK-based charity, Comic Relief.
Tomb Raider actress Angelina Jolie is now well-known for her humanitarian efforts, but had a reputation as a Hollywood wild child back in the day.
This side of Jolie’s personality is perhaps reflected in her edgy knife collection, which includes numerous personalized blades.
She owns many Darrel Ralph-Bailsong handmade butterfly blades, which are so highly sought-after that orders can take months to process.
Knife collecting can be a pricy hobby, with premium blades reaching prices of $20,000 (£14.6k).
Mamma Mia! actress Amanda Seyfried has one seriously weird hobby: collecting dead animals.
She once said in an interview, “Of course I have a stuffed raccoon — who doesn’t?"
Her oddball collection includes a deer named Sha ’Dynasty, an owl named Beatrice, a zebra named Kevin Sparkle, and a baby horse, Antione Woodberry.
It’s estimated that the cost of stuffing a full-sized animal is between $2,000-$4,000 (£1.4-£2.9k), and Seyfried claims to have a mini museum of the creatures.
Acclaimed Hollywood director, Martin Scorsese, collects vintage film posters.
Explaining his passion, he said: "You’d hold and absorb the image in your mind’s eye. Part of the excitement then was in watching the actual film and comparing it with the possible or likely film you’d conjured up during the few seconds you looked at the poster. It had to give you some sense of the picture but it also carried its own mystery and romance."
His collection was displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (pictured) in 2015. It includes prints from classic cinema such as Sullivan’s Travels, starring Veronica Lake, On the Waterfront, starring Marlon Brando, and The Searchers, starring John Wayne.
