With much of the world unable to go about their usual business due to the coronavirus outbreak, there has been a renewed emphasis on working from home. Offering greater flexibility, no commuting costs and fewer distractions, remote working can prove appealing. The good news is that employers are increasingly advertising roles that allow you to work from home that suit life in lockdown, and beyond. Survey respondents
A quick and easy way to earn some extra spending money each month is by completing online surveys. Market research companies look for people from all kinds of backgrounds and demographics to offer their opinions on a range of subjects – from products to TV shows to politics. Some respondents earn points per survey, which can then be exchanged for vouchers, while other survey companies offer cold hard cash. Paid Surveys UK estimates some people can even earn up to $375 (£300) a month in their spare time.

TEFL teacher
A Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification isn't just for gap year students. Those with a recognised accreditation, such as TEFL, CELTA or TESOL, can also teach English from the comfort of their own home. Many language companies are looking for teachers who can work remotely via video with schoolchildren aged between 4 and16 in places such as China. Online English language teachers typically earn between $10 (£8) to $40 (£32) an hour.
Telesales representative
Armed with a phone, a headset and excellent communication skills, those with sales experience can find work as a remote telesales representative. Being flexible when it comes to working hours in order to cater to international markets can help too. A recent job advert for FringeBacker Events in Hong Kong also required applicants to be able to keep an updated customer database, measure identified key performance indicators, more commonly known as KPIs, and strive towards meeting sales quotas.
Journalist
The journalism world has changed rapidly over the last two decades, but there are still roles out there for reporters and editors – albeit far from the traditional medium of print. Freelance journalists can research, write and file copy from the comfort of their own home, and as journalism increasingly moves online even staff journalists can easily write and publish content remotely. For example, Power Poll, an American survey, news and information firm which surveys powerful people in various US cities on topical issues, then compiles and publishes the resulting insights, has been searching for remote-working, freelance market editors to create and edit content.

Career coach
People with a passion for mentoring and strong communication skills may want to consider becoming a mentor or career coach. Microverse is an online learning platform for software developers, where students from more than 70 countries don't pay anything until they land a job. Career coaches for the company prepare students for the job market by helping them hone their CV, application and interview skills and can earn between $35,000 (£27.9k) – $70,000 (£56k) a year.
Translator
Language skills are highly sought after in today's multicultural world, with the employment of interpreters and translators expected to increase by 19% over the next decade, according to CollegeGrad.com. Translators are generally required to have native-level language proficiency in at least two languages and can end up translating a variety of content – from legal to commercial to scientific. The job can easily be done remotely but pay tends to be dependent on location and specialism.

Clinical or counselling psychologists
Business is booming for therapy apps as many mental health services become increasingly overwhelmed. UK company My Online Therapy employs clinical or counselling psychologists, who have NHS careers as well as private work, to provide a high-quality service that matches clients with whatever therapy they need, such as cognitive behavioural therapy and narrative therapy for at least five hours a week.
Team leader
Just because people are working from home, it doesn't mean there needs to be a lack of structure within an organisation, and many businesses employ remote team leaders to manage their workers. For example, British gambling support charity Gamcare is looking for a full-time home-based team leader to manage its treatment practitioners and services, offering an annual salary of between $37,500 (£30,000) – $43,830 (£35,000).

Customer service representative
With the financial services, retail and utilities sectors becoming increasing competitive and consumer focused, good customer service is great way for businesses to add value to their offering and stand out from the crowd. So those willing to work flexible shifts, with good communication skills and a friendly phone manner, can apply for home-working roles as customer services representatives. A recently-advertised job for McConville Communications advertised a job for up to $12 (£9.30) an hour.

Test assessor
Companies such as Altus Assessments, which administers the CASPer screening tool used in many US and Canada academic admissions processes, rely on assessors to rate the results. Working entirely online, test assessors are asked to rate applicant responses in a fair and unbiased manner. CASPer raters tend to come from a variety of backgrounds and can earn between C$20.00 ($14/£12) to C$35.00 ($25/£20) an hour.

Account executive
Whether working for a marketing company or a life sciences company, an account executive is a person who establishes and builds relationships with new clients and nutures relationships with existing ones. Given they are usually the point of contact between the client and the branding team, among others, the role tends to be office-based, but in the era of digital nomads, some companies – particularly start-ups – are happy for them to work remotely.

Research programmes often require consultants with knowledge of a particular subject area to advise on their projects, and so many of these positions can be suitable for remote working. The UK's Institute of Development Studies, for example, has been looking for a policy and engagement consultant, to work on its digital financial services, digital ID and tax, or DIGITAX, project.
Software developer
Software developers are the people behind the design of the computer programmes and operating systems we use in everyday life – from games to word processing programmes and banking websites. The very nature of the role makes it perfect for remote working with coders specialising in a range of software and applications. Microsoft subsidiary GitHub, the world's leading software development platform, regularly advertises work-from-home roles for jobseekers around the world.

Copywriter
Copywriting differs from other forms of writing as it focuses specifically on marketing and other promotional material – be it on a brochure, billboard or online. The average salary for copywriters is about $58,465 (£47k) according to jobs website Glassdoor, although highly-skilled professionals can earn more, and many copywriters work in a freelance capacity writing for multiple companies and brands. The act of copywriting itself is often a solitary activity – making it perfect for working from home.

Administrative assistant
Administrative assistants are key to the smooth running of any company and successful candidates tend to be organised, proactive and able to build rapport with colleagues and clients alike. But with many administrative tasks now digitised, it's a role that can increasingly be done outside of the traditional office environment. US cybersecurity tech firm CrowdStrike has recently advertised for an administrative assistant, with remote candidates in certain time zones considered.

Operations Engineer
Operations engineers are experts whose key role is to screen large computer networks and servers for glitches. While positions are often office-based, some companies like DocuSign – a US tech company which enables businesses to manage their agreements electronically – recruit remote workers. Candidates should have several years of system administration experience, as well as history of working in a live site operations environment.
Community manager
Social media natives with particularly strong organisational skills may want to apply for a work-from-home role as a community manager. California-based Good Money, the world's first banking platform owned by its customers, recently advertised for someone to grow and engage its digital community in accordance with the neobank's mission to help reshape the financial system. Required skills included being able to manage and optimise its social media channels and thrive in a remote working setup.

Receptionist
Receptionists are traditionally an in-situ role, and are often the first person you meet when entering an office building. But when they're not greeting visitors in person, they're answering phones and helping with the smooth running of operations and some companies are moving such desk-based roles online. US-based Smith.ai is currently recruiting staff for its virtual receptionist service, with pay starting at $10 (£8) an hour or $11 (£9) for bilingual employees.

Marketing specialist
Marketing specialists devise and implement marketing programmes that communicate with customers through channels such as email, websites, social media and print. The average salary for the role in the US is $54,268 (£44k) per annum according to Glassdoor, while the average equivalent UK wage is $43,000 (£34.7k) a year. Required skills tend to include content creation, marketing strategy, and the launching and leading marketing campaigns – all of which can be easily done online.
Talent manager
A business is nothing without its employees, and recruiting and nurturing talent is beneficial to any company's performance. Sweden-based YouPal recently recruited for a remote talent manager, with an HR and management background, to search for the best in the IT field. With a listed salary of between $24,000 (£19k) – $36,000 (£29k), the job ad said candidates should have a keen eye for talent and "understand what it takes for talent to succeed".
Freelance creatives
Creative workers can easily work in a freelance capacity, and therefore work from home. Creatives such as graphic designers and copywriters can also sign up to platforms such as The Hoxby Collective, a UK-based online talent platform for freelancers that offers businesses the services of more than 1,000 freelance professionals in over 30 countries. As well as a platform for freelance creatives Hoxby also works with marketing, PR and HR professionals too.
Virtual assistant
Virtual assistants provide support services to businesses and individuals from a remote location, making them an ideal work-from-home post. Different people need different things, but VAs typically help organise meetings, manage paperwork and files, liaise with clients and assist with small projects. The US Dentist Entrepreneur Organization recently posted a part-time virtual assistant post with a salary of $15 (£12) to $17 (£14) per hour, dependent on experience, although salaries can be higher.
Content editor
Any company worth their salt has a website and one of the main ways to drive traffic to it is by having a constant flow of high-quality content. That's where a content editor can prove invaluable, through developing, producing and editing snappy and relevant web material to keep customers and readers engaged and on the site. As most work is done online, it can be the ideal job to do from home, with a recent role at UK educational publisher Twinkl offering a salary of $25,600 (£20,475).
Facilities co-ordinator
ServiceChannel is a US-based facilities management software company that enables users to manage all maintenance activities from a single platform. It is currently seeking a facilities co-ordinator available between the hours of 9am and 6pm EST, who can handle inbound support inquiries, identify system issues and provide training and guidance to clients, among other tasks. Previous experience of facilities management within the hospitality or restaurant industry is preferred.

Proposal writer
A proposal writer's job is to produce specific documents with the ultimate aim of convincing the recipient do something specific – be it donate money, enter into a business arrangement or buy goods or services. Like other writing jobs, it can be an ideal task for people to do from home, so long as they can produce accurate, high-quality and persuasive content written to a specific brief. A recent role posted by GC Associates USA paid between $30 (£24) and $40 (£32) an hour.

Biostatistician
Highly-skilled scientific jobs can also often be done remotely. AL Solutions is currently recruiting a biostatistician with experience of phase 1 studies to work with an oncology-focused contract research organisation. They can be based anywhere in Europe, although need to make occasional trips to London for sponsor meetings. The salary is advertised as being between $49,000 (£40k) to $62,000 (£50k) per annum.
Senior attorney
Even lawyers and legal experts can apply for jobs that involve working from home. Privacy-first internet browser DuckDuckGo is recruiting a senior attorney to serve as principal legal advisor on relevant business operations, assist in navigating HR and immigration issues and develop policies to ensure compliance with local, national and international laws. The company is fully remote, although the successful applicant does need to reside in the US.
