James Bond is one of the most successful film franchises of all time, grossing $7.9 billion over the decades, the equivalent of well over $20 billion (£15bn) in today's money.

Since the series launched in 1962, seven actors have portrayed 007 across 27 movies. But which actor has earned the most from playing the suave spy, and who is the richest overall? Read on to discover where each Bond star ranks by net worth.

Australian-born George Lazenby starred in just one Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). He was 29 years old at the time, making him the youngest actor to play 007.

Despite signing a contract for six more films and being offered a hefty $1 million ($8.7m/£6.7m today) to star in Diamonds Are Forever, Lazenby dramatically quit the franchise. He cited his unhappiness with his lack of creative input and a desire to pursue other acting opportunities.

Lazenby, now 85, has expressed mixed feelings about leaving Bond behind. While he's stated he has "no regrets", he's also claimed that he walked away from his 007 role following bad advice from his agent.

British actor Timothy Dalton portrayed suave spy James Bond in two films: The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989).

Unlike Lazenby, Dalton was an experienced actor before joining the franchise. He'd already appeared in films including Wuthering Heights (1970) and Flash Gordon (1980), as well as TV series like Charlie’s Angels (1979) and Jane Eyre (1983).

The late British actor David Niven played 007 in the spoof film Casino Royale (1967), offering a satirical take on the secret agent. While the movie isn't part of Eon's official Bond franchise, it remains a cult classic among fans.

Oscar-winning actor Niven, acclaimed for roles in The Moon Is Blue (1953) and Separate Tables (1958), was actually James Bond author Ian Fleming's first choice – over Sean Connery – to portray 007 in the Eon franchise.

The British actor was already an established star in film and on the small screen before landing 007. His breakout role was in the spy series The Saint (1962).

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan fronted four Bond films: GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002).

Brosnan rose to fame thanks to his role in the 1980s detective TV series Remington Steele, while his early movie credits include the spy thriller The Fourth Protocol (1987) and the comedy Mrs. Doubtfire (1993).
