The market for covetable paper money is buoyant and top collectors don't think twice about paying millions of the dollars for the rarest examples. To give you an idea about how much these prized banknotes are worth, here are the 30 most valuable specimens in the world.
England 1948 £1 million Treasury Note – $86,000 (£69k)
Weirdly, unlike most pricey rare notes, the most valuable English banknote of all time fetched a fraction of its face value at auction in 2011. The £1 million non legal tender note was printed in 1948 under the post-war Marshall Plan and is just one of two surviving examples.
USA 1882 $100 Gold Certificate – $117,500 (£94k)
Gold certificates were used as paper currency in the USA between 1863 and 1933. They guaranteed the bearer the note's value in gold. The rarest specimens are worth a fortune – this 1882 $100 version, one of just seven, went under the hammer for $117,500 (£94k) in 2013.
USA 1928 $50 Gold Certificate – $120,000 (£96k)
This super-rare gold certificate fetched $120,000 (£97k) at auction in 2014. Very few $50 examples were printed in 1928 and only 12 are thought to have survived, the majority of which are held by the Federal Reserve and various museums.
Palestine 1938 £100 Banknote – $125,000 (£100k)
Banknotes issued by the Palestinian Currency Board are highly sought-after by collectors. The most desirable specimen, a green £100 note which was printed in 1938, has been valued at a hefty $125,000 (£100k) by Spink's auctioneers.
China 1909 One Yuan/Dollar Ooi-Long Banknote – $127,000 (£102k)
This beautifully designed one yuan/dollar note was issued back in 1909 by the Kwangsi Bank. Extremely rare, only three examples of the Ooi-Long note survive. The last one that came up for auction realised $127,000 (£102k) in 2010 - a record at the time for a Chinese banknote.
USA 1890 $100 Treasury Note – $129,250 (£104k)
There are fewer than three dozen surviving 'Watermelon Hundred' bills, so called due to the watermelon-like effect on the zeros, and collectors will pay over the odds to get hold of a specimen. This one was sold by Heritage auctioneers in 2013 for $129,250 (£104k).
USA 1934 Fr. 2221-H $5,000 Federal Reserve Note – $141,000 (£113k)
High denomination US dollar banknotes are pretty scarce, and while the US Treasury printed a total of 342 $5,000 bills, far fewer are known to exist. In 2013, this pristine 1934 specimen fetched $141,000 (£113k) at auction.
USA 1869 Fr.151 $50 Bill – $176,250 (£142k)
One of 61 known specimens, this $50 bill from 1869 is prized for its strong definition and impeccable condition. The exquisite note was bid over by the cream of the banknote collecting world and went for $176,250 (£142k) at auction in 2013.

Another rare high denomination dollar banknote, this beauty is one of just two dozen $1,000 bills that were issued in 1880. This particular specimen is in superb condition, so it's not surprising it realised such an impressive figure at auction in 2013.
USA 1907 $1,000 Gold Certificate – $176,250 (£142k)
This banknote is the only example of a 1907 $1,000 gold certificate bearing the signature combo of Napier/McClung. Needless to say, it sold for a not too shabby $176,250 (£142k) at a Heritage auction in 2013.
USA 1863 $50 Bill – $182,125 (£146k)
A highly desirable legal tender banknote, this $50 bill from 1863 is one of just eight bearing the same Friedberg number. The note was auctioned by Heritage in 2013 and fetched $182,125 (£146k).
USA 1883 $500 Brown Seal Gold Certificate – $193,875 (£156k)
The only known example of a brown seal $500 gold certificate, this 1883 $500 note surfaced in 2000 at the Memphis 2000 Auction and fetched $143,000 (£115k). It was sold again in 2013 for $193,875 (£156k).
USA 1882 Fr.1192a $50 Gold Certificate – $200,000 (£161k)
This $50 gold certificate from 1882 has a unique Friedberg number, which is a highly desirable attribute according to the experts. The one-of-a-kind banknote realised $200,000 (£161k) at auction in 2013.
Zanzibar 1908 20 Rupees – $225,000 (£180k)
Part of a small collection that sold for $225,000 (£180k) at auction in 2011, this 20 rupee specimen is the world's most valuable African note. It is highly prized for its rarity and intricate design.
USA 1880 Black Back $100 Silver Certificate – $235,000 (£189k)
Like gold certificates, silver certificates guaranteed the bearer the corresponding value in silver. The only wholly uncirculated 1880 black back $100, this specimen went for $235,000 (£189k) at a Heritage auction in 2013.
USA 1891 $50 Seward Treasury Note – $235,000 (£189k)
Must-have banknotes for serious collectors, $50 bills bearing the signature of Secretary of State William H. Seward are held in high regard by notaphilists. This stunning example went under the hammer for $235,000 (£189k) in 2013.
USA 1902 Alaska $5 Bill – $246,750 (£198k)
This Alaskan banknote was printed during the state's famous Klondike gold rush and was among the first $5 bills issued by the First National Bank of Fairbanks. It was sold in 2012 for $246,750 (£198k).
Australia 1817 First Banknote – $252,000 (£202k)
The very first Aussie banknote was issued the day the Bank of New South Wales opened in 1817 when the country was in its infancy. It was discovered in a Scottish collection in 2005 and sold for $252,000 (£202k) in 2014 at a Noble Numismatics auction in Sydney.
USA 1863 Spread Eagle $100 Bill – $305,500 (£245k)
Banknote collectors go crazy for the famous Spread Eagle dollar bill design. This specimen is one of only two uncirculated Spread Eagles that has come on the market since 1947. It garnered $305,500 (£245k) at auction in 2013.
China 1904/1908 One Yuan/Dollar Banknote – $322,000 (£259k)
A world record for a Chinese banknote, this Qwing dynasty one yuan/dollar banknote fetched a whopping HK$ 2.4 million (£259k) at auction in 2011. The note uniquely features two years – 1904 on the back and 1908 on the front, the years of printing and issuing respectively.
USA 1880 Fr. 187k $1,000 Bill – $330,000 (£265k)
Just four examples of this high denomination legal tender banknote are known to exist, hence its high value. Collectors also prize the $1,000 bill's intricate illustrations. This one went for $330,000 (£265k) at auction in 2013.
USA 1863 $20 Gold Certificate – $352,500 (£286k)
While a total of 48,000 1863 $20 gold certificates were issued, only six survived. This ultra-rare example is one of the best. Unsurprisingly, it realised a substantial $352,500 (£286k) when it was auctioned in 2013.
USA 1880 Fr. 1851 $500 Bill – $411,250 (£330k)
The only Bruce/Roberts-signed $500 legal tender bill in private hands – the rest are held at the Smithsonian and the Federal Reserve – this extra-special banknote sold at auction in 2013 for $411,250 (£330k).
USA 1931 Rare $10 Silver Certificate – $500,000 (£402k)
This 1931 $10 silver certificate has one very special attribute – its first off the press serial number of A00000001A. Thanks to this super-desirable feature, experts have valued the note at a cool $500,000 (£402k).
Australia 1913 First Modern 10 Shilling Banknote: $755,000 (£606k)
Likewise, Australia's first modern 10 shilling banknote, which boasts a serial number of 00001, is worth $755,000 (£606k). It was sold to a private collector in 2014 and currently resides in a Sydney bank vault.
Australia 1918 First £1 Banknote – $1.1 million (£880k)
Last year, the very first Australian one pound note was discovered languishing in a storeroom at the National Library in Canberra, much to the chief librarian's delight. The banknote, which dates from 1918, has been valued at a jaw-dropping $1.1 million (£880k).
Australia 1924 £1,000 Banknote – $1.2 million (£963k)
This high denomination Australian note was snapped up by The Rare Coin Company in 2008. Exceedingly rare and much prized by collectors, it remains the most valuable Australian banknote and most valuable 20th century banknote sold at auction.
USA 1882 $500 Gold Certificate: $1.4 million (£1.12m)
The only Fr. 1215d $500 1882 Federal Reserve gold certificate in private hands, this unique rarity was sold by Heritage for $1.4 million (£1.12m) in 2014. Historically important, it was described as “transfixing” by the auctioneer.
USA 1891 Red Seal $1,000 Treasury Note – $2.5 million (£2m)
Setting a then world record for a rare banknote, this 1891 red seal $1,000 treasury note realised $2.5 million (£2m) at auction in 2013. Only one of two surviving specimens, the high denomination note is a collector's dream acquisition.
USA 1890 Grand Watermelon $1,000 Treasury Note – $3.29 million (£2.6m)
The rarest and most celebrated of all US banknotes was never going to come cheap. But the famous 1890 Grand Watermelon $1,000 treasury note exceeded all expectations when it fetched a staggering $3.29 million (£2.6m) at auction in 2014, making it the world's most valuable banknote, and then some.

There also in excellent condition very amazing condition I had put all my banknotes in a notebook with plastic over them to keep them from ruining from anything you can take plastic off and they still look brand new I had them sence I was like 14 and I'm 29 now
