ASOS money-saving tips and tricks

Updated on 23 October 2017

From joining the A-List to using the US site instead of the UK one, here’s how to saving money on your next online shopping trip to ASOS.

Sign up to the newsletter

When you sign up to the ASOS newsletter you’ll be one of the first to know about sales and offers.

Subscribers are also often treated to discount codes. We’ve seen ones to celebrate payday as well as in the run-up to key shopping periods throughout the year like bank holidays and Christmas.

If you’re worried about your inbox getting flooded by ASOS emails, consider setting up an alternative address to keep them separate.

Use your A-list vouchers and privileges

The ASOS A-List is a free loyalty scheme for UK customers that is well worth taking advantage of.

Unlike other loyalty schemes, shoppers are automatically enrolled into the A-List scheme when they place an order and you must actively opt-out if you’re not interested in the benefits.

The scheme allows you to earn five points for every £1 you spend. For every 500 points (which equates to a £100 spend) you’ll earn a £5 voucher, which lasts for six months.

The loyalty scheme is tiered so that, the more you spend, the more perks you can unlock. Below is a rundown of the benefits of each tier.

Shop international ASOS sites

You might be able to save money by shopping on an international ASOS site.

The US ASOS site, for example, sells American brands like Juicy Couture and Converse for less.

You just need to change the site you are looking at in the top right-hand corner of the website to the United States and change the currency to GBP.

ASOS changing site and currency

We found a Juicy Couture Black Label Tricot Pant with Stripe for £150 on the UK site. The same item was $165 on the US site, but once you change the currency to GBP the item comes to £104.49.

ASOS cheaper US site in GBP

So, you could save £55.51 by shopping on the US ASOS site and as ASOS offers free delivery worldwide on orders over £20 there are no shipping costs to factor in.

Just remember if you are sent items from outside the EU you will probably have to pay VAT and Customs Duty if they are above a certain value.

Items under £135 don’t attract Customs Duty. Items worth more than £135 attract Customs Duty at a rate of 2.5%.

VAT is charged on items worth over £15 on the whole price including any Customs Duty due at a rate of 20%.

You should also factor in what your bank will charge you for making an overseas transaction, but you can use a fee-free credit card to help curb these charges.

So, in our example the true saving (if we use a fee-free credit card) and pay the right duties will be closer to £125.39, which amounts to a smaller £24.61 saving.

Get ASOS Premier Delivery

If you’re a regular ASOS shopper you should sign up to ASOS Premier Delivery.

It costs £9.95 and offers free unlimited standard, next day and nominated day delivery (apart from public holidays) for an entire year.

ASOS says the scheme saves customers up to £5.95 per order so you only need to make two orders in a year for the cost of the membership to pay off.

There’s no limit on how many items you order and you can use it as many times as you like within the 12-month membership period.

It’s worth pointing out that ASOS Premium Delivery won’t automatically renew after it expires, so you won’t be caught out a year down the line like with some other delivery saver services.

Register for the student discount

Students get 10% off at ASOS.

You just need to complete the form with a student email address and you’ll get the 10% discount right up until you graduate.

Earn cashback on purchases

You should always check if you can earn cashback on your purchases by shopping through tracked links available with Quidco or TopCashback.

At the moment Quidco is offering 10% cashback at ASOS and TopCashback is offering 10.5%. However, both offers are for new customer sales.

If you’re not a new customer you can still get money back using a cashback credit card. You can compare deals using the loveMONEY comparison centre.

Use the filters

If you have a budget and want to avoid overspending use the filters to make sure you don’t get distracted by items that aren’t really in your price range.

They’re also handy for only showing things in the size and colour you want too.

Make a wish list

ASOS has thousands of items on its website which can be hard to browse through so try to make a wish list as you go with the Save heart button.

This adds items to a basket and keeps them there for up to 60 days.

Often ASOS will send a voucher code to encourage you to make the purchases but it’s also a handy way to keep an eye on the prices of things you actually want.

The button is located next to the Add to Bag button (see below).

Always check if ASOS is cheaper

ASOS has its own fashion and beauty range but the site also stocks items from high street retailers like New Look, River Island and Whistles as well as brands like Nike, Adidas and Ray Ban.

So, it’s worth checking to see if ASOS is cheaper than buying direct from retailers. If nothing else the site might just have items that are out of stock elsewhere.

For example, when we looked ASOS was having a 20% off maternity event (with discount code 20MATERNITY) so a pair of New Look Maternity Over the Bump Skinny Jeggings which are normally £19.99 could be picked up for just £15.99. Direct from New Look there was no offer so you’d have to pay £19.99.

Search the Marketplace for vintage bargains

ASOS Marketplace is home to new brands and vintage boutiques.

So, if you’re looking for something a bit different it’s a great place to shop, but it can also bag you some great savings.

We found this vintage North Face rain jacket for £39.95. The brand normally costs upwards of £55.

Shop the Outlet for hidden gems

The ASOS Outlet stocks big brands and other key fashion pieces that have been marked down by as much as 70%.

These seem to be end-of-the-line items that haven’t sold out. So, some clothes and shoes are a bit hit and miss when it comes to the sizes, but the accessories are worth a look.

This Fiorelli Elliot Satchel Shoulder Bag, for example, has been marked down 40% from £65 to £42.
