Virgin Media doubles broadband speeds

Updated on 11 January 2012 | 3 Comments

Free upgrades for all broadband customers announced, with four million set to have their speed doubled.

Virgin Media is to double broadband speeds for four million of its customers and increase its top speed from 100Mb (or megabits per second) to 120Mb.

Starting next month until mid-2013, the company will roll out the faster speeds as follows:

  • 10Mb customers’ speed will be increased to 20Mb
  • 20Mb and 30Mb customers’ speeds will be increased to 60Mb
  • 50Mb customers’ speed will be increased to 100Mb
  • 100Mb customers’ speed will be increased to 120Mb
  • There will be no extra charge for the increased speeds.

Virgin estimates the 120Mb speed will allow customers to download a music album in 4.4 seconds and a High Definition film in five minutes.

It also says the highest speed will benefit customers with multiple devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets all connected to the internet at the same time.

The Government has been pushing for super-fast broadband to be available to 90% of the UK by 2015.

New Virgin Media customers taking out a broadband, phone and TV bundle can currently get the first three months for free. We've rounded up all the latest top broadband offers here.
