Fake Amazon reviews: 'I was offered £30 to write a five-star write up'

Retailers selling through Amazon are offering valuable gift cards so long as customers leave five star reviews.

Checking the reviews for an item or service before purchasing it online is always a good idea.

After all, it’s not enough to read the details provided by the retailer ‒ you also want to get a sense of what real customers thought, whether it lived up to their expectations.

Or at least, that used to be the smart move.

However, the swarm of fake reviews manipulating the system means it’s incredibly difficult to work out what high-ranking products deserve those scores, and which stand out from the crowd simply because of paid-for reviews.

Getting paid to leave a review

Earlier this month, a loveMONEY member of staff purchased a new laptop on Amazon. It arrived promptly, and by all accounts has done the job he wanted. A success all round.

And then, last week, he received a letter from the business selling the laptops through the post (pictured below).

It very much made it sound like he had won some kind of prize - calling him a ‘lucky customer’ - before adding that he would be paid for leaving a positive review of the product on Amazon.

In short, the company was offering him £30 if he was willing to go online and write up a five-star on Amazon.

Here is the text of the letter in full: 

Congratulations!

You will be selected as our lucky customer to receive a £30 Amazon Gift Card. Contact us and leave a 5-star rating. You will receive a £30 gift card code after the review has been viewed.

In addition, contact us and you will have the benefit of extending the two-year warranty period free of charge. We will always regard quality customer service as our goal. If you have any questions about your laptop, please feel free to contact us by email.

Steps to get the gift card

1. Login to Amazon and find 'My Orders"

2. Click "Write a Product Review" and "Add a Photo or Video"

3. Send screenshots of your review or review URL to laptop@strong-support.com

This is by no means a rare phenomenon.

A few months ago, my mother was offered £35 for a five-star review of a purifier she'd just purchased on Amazon and you can find many similar experiences being shared on the likes of Twitter.

These examples strike me as pretty blatant attempts at review manipulation. Why leave an honest review of a mediocre experience, if you could tell a few white lies and pocket up to £35?

Of course, the more five-star reviews the product gets, the better it performs on Amazon searches, meaning the retailer ends up selling even more of them, with no doubt more letters sent out to customers ‘encouraging’ them to leave a five-star review of their own.

Flooded with fake reviews

Last year, an investigation from the consumer champions at Which?, looked into the issue of fake reviews.

It set up a fake business, and then approached review brokers to look to boost the fake business’s profile pages on Google, Facebook and Trustpilot through bogus five-star reviews.

The fake business ‒ Gold Lion Labs, which claimed to offer PCR testing services ‒ built up 19 five-star reviews on Facebook within five days thanks to the services of these brokers.

When Which? looked into the profiles of the reviewers, it became clear that they had all reviewed many of the same businesses on Facebook. In total, 168 businesses had been reviewed by the same 19 profiles who also left a five-star review for the fake business set up by Which?

Things moved more slowly on Trustpilot, taking three weeks to gather 19 five-star reviews. However, by this point it had a 4.6 TrustScore on the site, far higher than the health consultant business category average of 3.6 stars.

It was a similar story with Google reviews, where the fake business quickly built up a high score.

Which? quizzed the reviews brokers they used on how straightforward it was to buy reviews on Google, and was told that in eight years none of the broker’s clients had experienced any issues.

Sadly, this is nothing new. At loveMONEY we’ve written before about the issues of fake reviews on Amazon and eBay, designed to manipulate the system.

Talking tough

After the investigation, Facebook did remove some of the profiles used for fake reviews, while TrustPilot said it was considering legal proceedings against the review brokers.

Google has also signalled it will consider legal avenues, an approach that Amazon has used in the past.

The trouble is that all of these firms ‒ and the Government, for that matter ‒ have talked tough about clamping down on the issue of fake reviews, and yet here we still are.

Clearly, if a business wants to beef up its review profile there are plenty of brokers willing and able to help them do it, with it seemingly only becoming an issue once the likes of Which? get involved.

And if the business prefers a more DIY approach, they can simply offer cash incentives to their actual customers to leave inflated reviews, as was the case with my mum.

The Government outlined plans for a bill which would ban fake reviews back in the Queen’s Speech, but an awful lot has changed since then, so who can say how important this issue will be for them? 

And so the problem drags on, with innocent shoppers continuing to be duped by fake reviews.

Because that’s the point in all this. This isn’t a victimless crime ‒ people are being conned into purchasing items, or working with businesses, based on reviews which are simply not independent. 

At loveMONEY we have always been passionate advocates of doing your homework before buying an item or service, so that you understand what you’re getting for your money. The trouble is that’s not easy to do when you can never really be sure how genuine the reviews are.

What’s beyond doubt is that for all of the tough talk from internet giants about cleaning up the problem, fake reviews remain a significant issue, and until it is dealt with properly plenty of normal people will end up out of pocket.

    Hi, I came across your article on the website and liked your point of view, I would like to contribute with you on the manipulation of customer reviews by Amazon products. I bought a pair of children's sunglasses for my child, after receiving the product, there is a QR code in the package saying that I need to activate my warranty, when I scan it, the interface tells me that I need to upload a positive review, so that I can get one 20 USD gift card. I am surprised that Amazon allows seller buy the review from buyer?! I am an Amazon prime user for more than 10 years. Customer reviews are one of the most important references when I place an order. Bought Amazon stock so I follow Amazon news, I know that Amazon used to come with a review card for products. Before Amazon cracked down hard, now there are new ways to manipulate reviews. I don’t know if Amazon will punished the seller or not. I've complained to Amazon but it doesn't seem to get any response, this product continues to be sold on Amazon with all five star reviews. Even got “Best Seller”logo. In this special period, online shopping is convenient for everyone. I also like shopping on Amazon.com, but I have a hard time believing that the world's No. 1 shopping platform is full of these good buying behaviors.     John's report resonates with me as I'm currently experiencing an issue with Wren Kitchens that I have posted on Trustpilot. I was invited by an email from Wren to post a review and for which I would receive a £20 Amazon voucher. There was no suggestion that I should award five stars. Equally, there was no condition applicable that would stop me receiving the £20 - within 2-3 working days after the review. Today is day 9 following my review of Wren Kitchens on Trustpilot and I'm still awaiting my £20. Each working day I email customer services at Wren and each day I post again on Trustpilot with a one-star reminder seeking my payment. Whilst my initial review gave an honest account of the kitchen purchase, delivery and installation there were several issues that arose that required me to email the CEO at Wren. They were resolved quite quickly after that. So, I awarded four stars to Wren. I've noticed that on Trustpilot there are a number of 'Invited' posts always giving 5-stars and generally short and sweet and hence providing little detail as to why the reviewer considered Wren to be excellent. These invited posts come in a flurry following a bad, one-star report from a reviewer who has NOT been invited. This is a classic technique to both maintain the overall high star rating and to push-down the stack thus moving the bad review to a place where fewer readers may access it. What I fail to grasp is why MY £20 voucher hasn't arrived when all these other equally invited reviewers do not complain about not receiving THEIR reward.
