Return of the Tesco Clubcard Voucher Exchange

The Tesco Summer Clubcard Voucher Exchange is back. Find out how you can boost the value of your Clubcard points.

Tesco has relaunched its popular Clubcard Voucher Exchange this week, which lets you double the value of your Clubcard points by swapping them for tokens to use in store.

The supermarket first launched the popular voucher campaign as a revamp for its loyalty card scheme back in 2009. Now you can once again boost the buying power of your accumulated points on anything from clothes to garden furniture.

How does it work?

Tesco shoppers can earn Clubcard points on virtually everything they buy in the store, excluding only a few items such as tobacco and lottery tickets.

You earn one point for every £1 spent, or £2 for fuel spends, unless you pay with a Tesco Clubcard Credit Card. Once you’ve accumulated 150 points you can exchange them for a £1.50 voucher to spend in store on non-food items, online at petrol filling stations or even on cinema tickets or meals out with Tesco’s partner companies.

The Clubcard Summer Exchange gets you a £10 token for just £5 worth of points. The promotion lasts until 13th June and customers can redeem the tokens until 19th June.

However, the tokens can only be used to buy items from certain departments.

What are the benefits?

It is free to join the scheme and you get double your money when shopping for certain items at Tesco. The departments where you’re free to spend the tokens includes: clothing, toys, opticians, baby and toddler, pet food, gardening, electrical, furniture and phones. There is also no limit to the sum you can exchange, which can be done at the supermarket or online.

What about the caveats?

As with any kind of voucher scheme there are exclusions.

Each token can only be spent in one selected department and no change is given, so the value of the items you buy must equal or exceed the value of the voucher.

An exchange token cannot be changed back into points or into cash for another department, so once you’ve made a decision you’re stuck with it.

Clubcard rewards

You might find that Clubcard rewards prove better value, depending on what you want to spend your money on.

You can swap £5 worth of points for a £20 discount on food at restaurants like Café Rouge and Pizza Express, effectively quadrupling the value of your points. So if you’re planning a meal out, sticking with rewards instead of tokens could be just the ticket.

Other loyalty schemes

Clubcard is not the only supermarket loyalty scheme to keep in mind.

If you don’t live near a Tesco store, or you prefer to shop elsewhere, you might prefer Sainsbury’s loyalty scheme with Nectar, which has its own promotion on at the moment. You can collect triple points – six points per £1 – by shopping online at the supermarket for non-food items. The offer is valid until 5th June.

You can get additional points if you go the Sainsbury’s website via Nectar.com first. Best of all, you don’t have to shop at Sainsbury’s at all to collect Nectar points - they can be accumulated at other shops and services too, including eBay, Debenhams and Homebase.
