The towns that pay the most Income Tax
A new report reveals the towns with the biggest and smallest Income Tax bills.
Esher pays the most Income Tax in Britain, according to research by UHY Hacker Young.
Celebrity residents like Gary Lineker and commuter lines into London are leading factors in the Surrey town's top ranking, with Income Tax bills rising 8% over the past year.
On average, Esher and Walton residents paid more Income Tax in 2012/13 (the most recent figures available) with bills averaging £16,900, up from £15,700 the year before. That’s almost four times the national average of £4,363.
Their average annual income is £59,600, well above the average UK gross annual salary of £27,200.
Almost all in the South East
Just one of the 10 top Income Tax towns is located outside the South East.
Tatton in Cheshire, which covers Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Knutsford, is home to a number of big names in football like Sir Alex Ferguson, Rio Ferdinand and Andy Cole.
The average Income Tax bill there is £10,500.
Tatton earned its place with its strong financial services sector along with good rail, road and air transport connections to Manchester.

Major tax boost
Esher and Walton is home to high-profile celebrities like Frank Lampard, Mick Hucknall and Chris Tarrant.
On top of that, the American School in England, whuch is located nearby, as well as other international colleges attract a large group of high-earning US bankers and executives who help to boost the government’s tax receipts. The highest earners pay additional level tax at 45%.
The Surrey town's proximity to London Heathrow makes it a popular spot with expats and non-doms, too.
At the bottom of the league table
Stoke-on-Trent is sitting at the bottom this year with bills of £2,100, eight times lower than those in Esher and half the national average.
