Co-operative Bank launches talking ATMs

400 talking ATMs have been launched by the Co-operative Bank, with thousands more to follow.

Co-operative Bank has launched 400 talking ATMs across the UK.

The bank plans to launch more than 1,000 talking cash machines by the end of the year, with a further 1,000 to be launched in 2014.

How it works

The talking ATMs also boast high-contrast screens and are designed to help blind and partially-sighted users.

A headset is plugged into the ATM, which delivers the spoken instructions. As a result you don’t need to worry about the person behind you hearing just how much you have in your bank account!

Co-op says that the talking ATM functionality will eventually be available at all Co-operative Bank branch ATMs and at most ATMs at Co-operative Food stores.

Talking ATMs

A number of other banks have committed to launching talking ATMs. NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland is overhauling 3,800 machines from next year, while Lloyds and Nationwide have also committed to implementing them.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has been instrumental in getting banks on board with talking ATMs as part of its Make Money Talk campaign.

According to the RNIB there are around two million people suffering from some form of sight issues that would benefit from talking ATMs.
