RBS and NatWest Basic account customers get easier access to their money
From the end of the year, the Link ATM network will be open for use by RBS and NatWest Basic Bank Account customers.
Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Group has announced that it will be re-opening access to the Link ATM network for all of its customers. RBS and NatWest Basic Bank Account customers are currently only able to use RBS and NatWest cash machines.
Basic bank accounts are a type of current account that don’t offer overdraft facilities and cheque books. They’re designed primarily for use by people who have a poor credit history and those who been refused a bank account in the past.
RBS blamed the ATM ban on the charges levied on them by rival banks.
A matter of trust
RBS has said that by reversing its 2011 decision to restrict access to ATMs for RBS and NatWest Basic Bank Account customers, it hopes to “earn back the trust of its customers”.
RBS CEO Ross McEwan commented on the rethink, saying “you don't make life harder for those who need your help most. We need to rebuild trust with our customers.”
The change will take effect by the end of this year.
Lloyds Bank and TSB announced earlier this year that they were allowing basic bank account customers to access other ATMs from July, which at the time left the RBS Group banks as the only ones still restricting access for basic bank account customers.
