Supermarkets announce further cuts in petrol and diesel prices

Supermarkets announce yet another round of cuts to fuel prices as oil price falls.

Supermarkets have announced yet another round of fuel price cuts.

Tesco has already cut prices, while Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons will be cutting prices from tomorrow (Saturday).

What's happened?

Asda kicked things off by knocking 2p a litre off its petrol and diesel from tomorrow. Drivers will pay a maximum of 117.7p a litre for petrol and 121.7p for diesel at Asda petrol stations.

This marks Asda's seventh price cut in two months. Since the end of September, its petrol has gone down by 9p a litre while diesel has fallen by 8p a litre.

Meanwhile Tesco has already cut prices by 2p a litre on petrol and diesel this afternoon.

Sainsbury's and Morrisons will also be cutting 2p off a litre on both fuels from Saturday.

These recent drops can be attributed to the falling wholesale price of oil to its lowest in over four years. The reduction is slowly being passed on to customers.

The price war so far

Asda has consistently led the way in the supermarket fuel price cuts, taking one or two pence per litre off its petrol and diesel prices at a time. Its competitors have followed shortly after, matching its deals.

RAC spokesperson Simon Williams believes that the cost of fuel should fall by well over 4p in the next few weeks, taking it below the 120p per litre mark. That will be the lowest price for fuel since December 2010.
