More energy firms fined for missing efficiency targets
Suppliers failed to meet environmental targets on time.
Three more energy firms have been fined by regulator Ofgem for failing to hit environmental targets on time.
ScottishPower has been fined £2.4 million, SSE has been fined £1.75 million and GDF SUEZ/IPM has been fined £450,000, all for missing their targets as part of the Government’s Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP).
The CESP scheme required energy suppliers to deliver energy saving measures to help lower carbon emissions and cut bills for households in low income areas. However, the deadline of 31st December 2012 was missed by most.
ScottishPower finally hit its target by the end of April the following year, while SSE made up its shortfall by May 2013. GDF SUEZ/IPM was the quickest to meet its target, fulfilling its obligation by March 2013.
Eventually all three firms overdelivered on the targets.
Where the fines will go
ScottishPower’s fine will be paid to the ScottishPower Energy People Trust, which is aimed at helping similar vulnerable people to those the CESP was designed for.
SSE’s fine is going to help vulnerable people through the Foundations Independent Living Trust, Energy Action Scotland and Citizens Advice for use in Wales. GDF’s fine will be paid to Age UK to support the charity’s community energy programmes.
British Gas was fined £11.1 million at the start of the month for failing to meet the same targets.
Sarah Harrison, Ofgem’s senior partner in charge of enforcement, explained: “Today’s redress package sends a clear message to the energy industry that late delivery of obligations is unacceptable.”
