Utility Warehouse scraps unlimited data for Gold members

Updated on 17 December 2014 | 0 Comments

Data allowance will be capped from January.

Utility Warehouse is cutting the unlimited mobile data allowance enjoyed by its Gold members from 1st January 2015.

The changes will impact a ‘few hundred’ Gold Talk and Double Gold customers on the ValueMax SIM-only or handset tariff.

The ValueMax tariffs offers a 2GB data allowance but Gold members (who have multiple services with Utility Warehouse) were entitled to an unlimited allowance.

From next year this perk will be scaled back and Gold members on the ValueMax tariff will have their data allowance capped at 4GB.

The free minutes and texts will remain the same and the overall price Gold members pay won’t change.

Utility Warehouse

Utility Warehouse offers home phone, broadband, mobile, gas and electricity services. It offers additional discounts to members when they take out more than one product.

Rather than advertising, the utility company relies on members referring their friends, with vouchers worth up to £150 offered as a reward if you get your friends or family to sign up.

Members can also earn cashback on bills when they shop with selected retailers.

Why is this happening?

Utility Warehouse said it was making the move so old and new customers pay the same price for the same service.

A spokesperson said: "We do not believe it is fair for customers who join at different times to pay different prices for our services, or receive different benefits. Unlike other suppliers, we do not keep existing customers on expensive legacy tariffs when we introduce new tariffs.

“We cannot justify continuing to offer unlimited data to a small group of legacy customers when this is not available to new customers."

What you can do

Utility Warehouse is writing to Gold members affected by the change.

Those on a SIM-only contract using their own handset can cancel penalty-free, without having to give the normal 30 days’ notice.

Those with a Utility Warehouse handset that are still in their pay monthly contract can also leave penalty-free by returning the device. The 30 days’ notice period will also be waived in this instance.
