Frugal Food

Here's our weekly round-up of the best restaurant deals and grocery discounts on offer, plus this week's top supermarket voucher codes!

This week we bring you half-price port, a great new Pizza Express offer, the latest promotion from Greggs, 3 for 2 edible Christmas gifts and the chance to buy short-dated food at bargain basement prices!

Best supermarket deals

This week, I'm going to start with the best offers at Tesco. There are a lot of good 2 for 1 deals on sweet treats, including two McVitie's cakes for £1.09, 12 Mr Kipling mince pies for £1.49, eight all-butter pain au chocolat for £1.69 and eight double chocolate muffins for £1.29. You can also currently get two 500ml bottles of Frijj milkshake for £1.

Away from all the sweet stuff, these pork shoulder joints have been reduced from £14.24 to £7.10 - which works out at around £2.22 per kg. Ten packs of Birds Eye Omega 3 fish fingers are half price, at 98p; and several varieties of Ribena are also half-price.

Sainsbury's is running a good half-price deal on Filippo Berio extra virgin olive oil (750ml): It's usually £4.64, but it's currently priced at just £2.32. Several varieties of Hellmann's mayonnaise are half-price, too.

Get over to ASDA to stock up on dried fruit and nuts: Hazelnuts (150g) usually cost £1.48 a bag, but you can currently get two bags for £1.50. The same offer applies to whole almonds (150g). And although Ocean Spray dried cranberries (170g) are normally £1.79, you can now pick up two bags for just £1.50.

There's another strangely-priced deal involving ASDA Celebration Cake Mix (531g). Each box usually costs £1.69, but at the moment you can pick up two boxes for £1!

Morrisons has a good 2 for 1 deal on Tetley tea bags at the moment, which means you get 320 tea bags for £3.55. And Morrisons Davidstow Cheddar (380g) is now better than half-price, reduced from £3.29 to £1.63.

Now that ASDA's great deal on Ben & Jerry's ice cream has ended, Morrisons' deal is one of the best around: Each 500ml tub is currently just £1.90 (maximum of six tubs per customer).

At the Co-op, you can now pick up 900g jars of Quality Street for just £4.50 each, reduced from the usual £9.50. Lidl is selling baking potatoes at just 50p per kg (reduced from £1.24 per kg).

And finally, Marks & Spencer has just released its latest 'two dine for £10' meal deal. It runs 5th-8th November, and you can view the full menu here.

In the comments on Frugal food last week, lovemoney.com reader hoghtonborn pointed out that there are much better deals on offer at street markets than there are at the supermarkets. That's very often true, but unfortunately their local nature makes it impossible for us to cover them properly here.

If you've come across a great food deal at your local market, please do leave a comment at the bottom of the article letting us know. That way, fellow readers in your local area can take advantage of the offer you've flagged up. Thanks!

Tipple

If you want to stock up on some of the sparkling stuff, have a look in Marks & Spencer. Until 17th November, bottles of Guillaume de Gand Champagne are on sale - in-store - for only £12.99.

At Morrisons, meanwhile, bottles of Cockburns Acclaimed Port (750ml) have been reduced from £11.99 to just £5.95 (maximum of six bottles per customer).

And finally... best before, cheaper afterwards!

If you're comfortable eating food that's past it's 'best before' date, have a look at Approved Food. This is an online store that specialises in selling short-dated or out-of-date 'best before' dry and tinned food products, as well as other clearance stock.

You'll have to root around to find the groceries that suit you - but most items are way below their RRP.

All deliveries under 28kg in weight will cost £5.25 (except in Northern Ireland and UK islands, where it will cost £10.50). It therefore makes sense to bulk buy, as long as you think you'll be able to use the goods before they really do go off!

To help decide if this sort of food is for you, read this Trading Standards advice on what 'use by', 'best before' and 'display until' really mean.
