Hello, I'm John Fitzsimons, and on today's make your money go further video, I'm going to be looking at how to get the most out of the UK's most popular loyalty scheme, the Nectar Card.
Last week it was revealed that Nectar had officially overtaken the Tesco clubcard to become the top loyalty scheme, with a whopping 16.8 million cardholders. The cards work in a very simple way - whenever you shop with a retail partner, like Sainsbury's, you gather points for each pound you spend. You can then cash in those points for all sorts of free goodies, from toys to TVs to free hotel stays.
So what can you do to boost your Nectar points?
Time your shopping
Timing is everything, particularly with Nectar points. Many of the scheme's member retailers offer periods where you can get additional points for shopping there. A great example is Sainsbury's, where until 5 March, so long as you do your shopping online and via the Nectar website, you'll get DOUBLE points. That means a whopping 4 points for every £1 you spend.
Before you do any shopping online, be sure to check the Nectar website and you'll see which stores are offering you the best return on your spending.
Additional cardholders
The great thing about loyalty schemes like Nectar is that you can get your other half and family members signed up to your account too. That way, every time they shop in a member shop and get their Nectar card scanned, you get rewarded without having to hand over a penny!
It's free money!
Thomson Local
Every time you phone out for a service, whether it be for a plumber or a pizza, be sure to use Thomson Local to find the number. So long as they have the Nectar symbol on their ad, you can get 150 points just for calling them!
So there you have it, three dead easy ways to ramp up your Nectar account. Points really do mean prizes with Nectar so it pays to get as many as you can, for pretty minimal effort.
That's it for me for today, thanks for watching lovemoney.com

I have another tip. 1 - Get the American Express Nectar Credit card. 2 - Shop at Tescos with your Clubcard and pay with your American Express Credit Card. Now you get lots of points. With a family of 5 (me, wife and 3 under 10s), we get around 20,000 Nectar points a year. This is pretty much just shopping and fuel. If you pay as many of your bills with the Amex card, then you get even MORE points. But always remember to pay the card off each month. Since using the Amex card and paying off the balance each month, we have not paid any interest. I think we've had well over £50,000 through the card (Eek! Well, that's what my spreadsheet tells me!). So, Tesco's prices are cheaper than Sainsbury's (but not as cheap as ASDA). We get loads of points as Amex. Nectar gives bonus points. And all the toys for the children's Christmas come from Argos, where we pay with Nectar points. Sweet! Regards, Richard.
