Sainsbury’s slashes price of milk to match Aldi and Lidl

Updated on 26 June 2015 | 8 Comments

Supermarket cuts prices to rival deep discounters.

Sainsbury’s has dropped the price of one- and two-pint bottles of milk to the same level charged by Aldi and Lidl.

So the cost of two pints of milk in Sainsbury's has fallen to 75p from 89p, while a pint will set you back 45p, down from 49p.

Paul Mills-Hicks, commercial director of food at the supermarket, said: “Four pints of milk is already great value, but we want to help those doing smaller everyday shops, so reducing the price of one and two pints is a great way to do that.” He added that fresh milk farmers would receive a fair price for their produce.

Big supermarkets fight back

The big four supermarkets – Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons – have regularly dropped their prices in a bid to compete with the growing market share of Aldi and Lidl. 'Loss leaders' such as milk are seen as a way to entice people into stores, where they will then hopefully spend money on other things.
