Supermarkets cut petrol prices by 2p

Updated on 21 August 2015 | 2 Comments

Supermarkets have reduced unleaded by two pence per litre in the latest round of fuel price cuts.

Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco have cut their petrol prices by two pence per litre.

Asda led the way by reducing the price of petrol from 111.7p per litre to 109.7p per litre, meaning that it has trimmed 9p per litre on diesel and 5p per litre on petrol in the past month.

The cut is already in effect at Asda. Tesco and Morrisons will be introducing it at 1pm and 2pm today (21st August) respectively. Sainsbury's will follow on Saturday.

Price drops will apply to petrol forecourts across the country.

Great for unleaded drivers

It’s good news for unleaded drivers after a series of diesel price cuts earlier this month.

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: "This latest price cut [from Asda], coming just two weeks after the last, will be met with cheer from drivers of the country’s 19 million petrol cars, who will have noticed that diesel drivers have been enjoying substantially lower prices for over a month now".

According to Dennis, the cost of filling up an average family petrol car is now £8 less than it was last summer while diesel is around £12 less per tank. The wholesale price of petrol has not fallen as fast as diesel.
