Petrol prices drop to lowest level in five years following Asda cut

Are we set for another round of supermarket fuel price cuts?

Motorists may be about to benefit from another bout of supermarket fuel price cuts, after Asda announced it would be cutting 2p a litre off the price of petrol and 1p a litre off diesel.

Asda operates a national fuel price cap, so this latest cut means that you won't pay more than 103.7p per litre on petrol or 106.7p per litre on diesel at any Asda forecourt. As a result petrol is now at its cheapest price in five years

The announcement comes just days after the last round of supermarket fuel cuts. When one big supermarket moves on price, the others tend to follow. We'll update this article as and when they do.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said that lower prices are being driven by an over-supply of oil which has kept the barrel under $52 since August. This saving has been passed on to retailers, and is now reaching motorists.

Get fuel even cheaper

If you use the right credit card, you can get your fuel even cheaper. For example, if you use the Santander 123 Credit Card which offers 3% cashback at all major filling stations, you could get petrol for under £1 a litre.
