EU referendum 2016: should Britain stay in the European Union or leave?
We now know that the referendum on whether we should remain part of the European Union will be held in June. But how will you vote?
At last, the date for the EU referendum has been announced.
On 23rd June 2016, the British public will vote on whether or not we remain part of the European Union.
In the coming months we’ll be hearing a flurry of arguments from both sides of the campaign willing us to vote in or out.
David Cameron has been involved in intensive discussions to renegotiate the terms of our EU membership, should we decide to stay.
They include changes to child and migrant welfare benefits, protection for the City of London’s financial services industry from Eurozone regulations and the freedom to keep the pound without fear of discrimination.
For and against
Those who want to stay think that being part of the EU makes selling things to other EU countries easier and that the flow of immigrants leads to economic growth and helps pay for public services. In short, they think we’re stronger as part of the EU.
However, those arguing to leave believe we’re being held back by the EU. They think that there are too many rules on business, not enough border controls and that we get very little in return for what we pay in EU membership fees. They believe we'll be better off going it alone. A number of senior Conservative figures have already broken ranks to declare they will be campaigning for Britain to leave, including Boris Johnson, Iain Duncan Smith and Chris Grayling.
Over the coming months we will be delving deeper into exactly what our EU membership means for your money, and what would happen if we left. But at this early stage, we want to know what you think: should we stay or should we go?
