Make and save money on Twitter by complaining, using voucher codes, posting sponsored tweets and more
It's more than just cat gifs and people's dinners.
Birthday celebrations are in order for Twitter this week as the social media site turns 10.
Twitter has proven itself as more than just a vehicle for sharing pictures of your dinner though, revolutionising the way we get news, interact with firms and even offering the chance to make and save money.
Voucher codes
Twitter can be a great source of voucher codes, helping you save on experiences, meals out and more.
The way that you redeem voucher codes hasn't changed; Twitter just provides a handy shortcut.
Follow @vouchercodes, @Voucherbox and @vouchercloud to keep up with the latest voucher codes and your ticket to cheaper stuff!
Complaining
It’s the modern equivalent of writing to a company address that you find on the back of a packet of crisps, but much easier. Complaining on Twitter has boomed in recent years, producing some of the finest customer service exchanges of all time.

But all hilarity aside, complaining on Twitter can get you money and freebies if you do it right.
- First of all, use the company’s Twitter handle and company name within your tweet so that it can be seen by as many people as possible. Perhaps another user might be having the same issue
- Try to make it short and to the point, summing everything up in 140 characters or less. Your argument will start to lose impact if it carries on over more than one tweet
- You shouldn’t be rude. Avoid this altogether by using humour to get your message across. If you don’t receive a reply, point this out in a follow-up tweet
- Remember not to swear! Some brands may have a policy that prevents them from responding to abusive tweets
- Ask a friend or family member with a lot of followers to retweet your complaint. The more people that have seen it, the likelier you are to get a speedy response.
Alternatively you could go for something a little more off the wall. This Twitter user promoted this tweet to BA to really get it noticed.

Sponsored tweets
Agreeing to do sponsored tweets can earn you a healthy bit of extra cash, but you need to have a presence on Twitter first.
The company you’re dealing with will need to know how many followers you have, how much influence you have over said followers and how many times you’ve tweeted before they take you on. Of course they’re not going to expect you to have as many followers as some celebrities, but as few as 100 will generally do. They’ll probably need to know how long you’ve been on Twitter too.
The company will give you guidance on how to create a sponsored tweet, but as a rule you’ll need to state that it’s a sponsored tweet or ad to avoid misleading your followers.
Head over to Sponsored Tweets or Ad Dynamo to sign up.

Being paid for posting affiliate links works in much the same way; just don’t bombard your followers or you risk losing them.
Competitions
Winning competitions on Twitter is really easy on the surface. All you normally have to do is follow and retweet to be in with a chance of bagging a prize.

But because they’re so easy to enter and the entries aren’t always truly randomised, they can be really tricky to win. To maximise your chances, try tweeting near the competition closing time, interacting with the promoter. Being a popular Twitter user also helps, but we’ll cover more on that later.
Avid ‘compers’ should try Hootsuite if they’re using a desktop. This will help to organise several Twitter feeds and searches into multiple columns which makes it much easier to find competitions and track hashtags.
Follow the right people
Sometimes in life it's all a question of who you know, and for Twitter it’s no different.
Try searching for money-related accounts, which can provide you with all sorts of money making or saving tips. Of course @lovemoney_com should be your first port of call!

Quick tips for popularity
As you’ve probably realised by now, ‘social capital’ really pays for itself on Twitter.
- Post motivational quotes, jokes, funny and/or cute pictures, complemented by catchy hashtags
- Keep up-to-date with current events to ensure that your content is always fresh, relevant and interesting. Adding a twibbon to your profile picture to show what causes you support
- Interact with other users by replying to tweets directed to you, retweeting and seeking out other users, particularly if they’re popular
- Customise your profile picture and background photo with something that gives users a real sense of who you are and, of course, bonus points for something interesting or funny
- If someone follows you, follow them back. Better yet, mention them using the Follow Friday hashtag (#FF) as a more personal way to say thanks.
These will help your follower numbers grow, making you more appealing to advertisers, companies and other users.
Don’t expect to make bundles of cash on Twitter; just think of it as more of a boost to your wallet.
