Royal Mint releases £5 coin for the Queen's 90th birthday
The Royal Mint has released a £5 coin to commemorate the Queen's birthday... but it could cost up to £7,500.
The Royal Mint is producing a £5 commemorative coin for the Queen’s 90th birthday, but it could set you back thousands of pounds.
Coins will be issued in a variety of finishes and metals, including uncirculated coins to silver (pictured above), gold and platinum versions.
Prices start at £13 for the 'Brilliant Uncirculated' coin, while the limited edition 5oz gold coin (one of only 150) will set you back up to £7,500.
Artist and sculptor Christopher Hobbs designed the coin, which has been decorated with roses to show the Queen’s love for flowers and nature.
Her majesty has approved the coin herself ahead of the big day on 21 April.
If you happen to have been born on the same day as HRH, you can get the new coin as a gift. There are 90 up for grabs - all it takes is a nomination and valid proof of birth. Nominations can be made by you or your friends and family on The Royal Mint's Facebook page.
Anne Jessopp, director of commemorative coin for The Royal Mint, said:
“We anticipate that coins created for Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday will prove popular with members of the public wishing to mark this historic occasion.”
The Queen’s 70th and 80th birthdays were also marked with commemorative coins as well as a £5 coin to mark the Queen record as the longest-reigning monarch. Production of the new 12-sided £1 coin also started just a few days ago, which will eventually be replacing the current one because of its enhanced security.
