AmazonFresh: Amazon's fresh food supermarket service has launched

Updated on 09 June 2016 | 0 Comments

You can now get your weekly grocery shop from Amazon, including fresh food. But hold on, there are a few things you should know about AmazonFresh first.

Amazon has launched its fresh food supermarket in the UK, but it’s not without its catches.

First of all, AmazonFresh is only available to Prime customers in 69 postcodes across central and east London. There are plans to roll out the service across the UK of course, but no date has yet been set.

Eligible members can order their full weekly grocery shop from a range of over 130,000 competitively priced products, including big British brands and goods from local producers like Borough Market and Notting Hill.

AmazonFresh has a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood, baked goods and dairy products as well as pet supplies, baby, health and beauty products.

Delivery is available in one-hour slots from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week. Same-day delivery is available from 5pm for orders placed by 1pm. Under Amazon’s Freshness Guarantee, shoppers can get a refund if they’re unhappy with the freshness of the products in their delivery.

Unlike rival supermarkets’ (sometimes questionable) product substitutions, customers won’t be charged for any unavailable items and will instead receive a free substitute product in its place.

"We believe that the key to the long-term success of AmazonFresh is to bring together the low prices, vast selection, fast delivery options and customer experience that Amazon customers know and love,” said Ajay Kavan, vice president of AmazonFresh.

"We will be very methodical and considered in how we roll this service out further in the UK."

But I don’t live in London or have Amazon Prime

Don’t despair if you live outside the capital. A smaller range of fresh and frozen items is also available through the company’s Prime Now service. It offers one-hour delivery or free and delivery within a choice of two-hour same day delivery slots to shoppers in London, Surrey, South Yorkshire, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Portsmouth and their surrounding areas.

You don’t strictly need to be a Prime customer though. You can get a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime just by signing up. Remember to cancel it before the 30-day period is up otherwise you’ll start being charged £6.99 a month.

Amazon launched its Grocery Store in 2010 and Amazon Pantry in November 2015 for non-perishable goods.
