Meanwhile, the cost of buying the same basket in Egypt and the USA has risen by more than 35%.

The research follows news that the prices on thousands of holidays look set to be slashed, after Thomas Cook posted a profit warning and one of Europe’s biggest travel operators, TUI Travel, announced sales were down 8%. The company still has 650,000 flights and holidays left to sell to UK consumers this year, with price reductions likely to be introduced over the coming weeks.
The travel industry is blaming the drop in demand for foreign holidays on the travel chaos caused by the volcanic ash cloud, sunny local weather and consumer anxiety about tax rises, public spending cuts and the economy.
The biggest price cuts look set to happen after the August Bank Holiday weekend, but even now, last-minute holidaymakers to Greece, Majorca, and Ibiza can find discounts of up to 40%.
Other top destinations tipped for bargain-hunters include eastern Mediterranean spots such as Paphos, Crete, Zante and Turkey, where a typical family holiday costs £232 less than last year, according to The Co-Operative Travel.

I would very much disagree with these results. I have visited Spain, Czech republic and Bulgaria this summer and by far for both value and quality. Bulgaria has been the most economical. Stay in a 4 star hotel (yes, proper 4 star quality) with swimming pool, saunas, fitness rooms, massage, bars and restaurants) really did cost me only £20 per night for a large double room for 1 person and that included full english breakfast each morning!!!

Spain is by not the cheapest as we were there and we found the following: Bread £2, Butter £1.75, Cola £1,Water £0.90, Apples £3 for 4!!, Bananas £1.75 for 5!! and this was from cut price local supermarkets. Also there are no offers i.e.BOGF and very little variety. And the euro is not a weak currency as you wrongly stated. The £ is equivalent to the euro. Eurozone especially France and Spain are still on the expensive side compared to the UK. We have an open market to operate that drives prices down and in Europe it is somewhat monopolise and laclusture. They only have the weather to their advantage!!!
