Sky Mobile 4G SIM-only tariffs - are they a good deal?

Updated on 06 January 2017 | 1 Comment

The new 4G SIM-only tariffs allow you to roll over unused data for up to three years. We take a look how Sky's new service compares.

Sky has joined the mobile market by launching a range of 4G SIM-only deals.

The new Sky Mobile service will piggyback off O2’s network and will be available on 12-month contracts.

A unique feature of the new deals is that users will be able to roll over any unused data each month for up to three years.

The new Sky Mobile service will be open to everyone, but Sky TV customers will get better deals and discounts for signing up.

What you can get

Sky Mobile will offer three 4G tariffs, packing either 1GB (£10 a month), 3GB ( £15) or 5GB (£20) of data.

Calls and texts will be offered on a pay as you go (PAYG) basis. Sky Mobile will charge non-Sky customers 10 per minute for calls and 10p per text.

Alternatively, you can pay an extra £10 a month for unlimited calls and texts.

However, Sky TV customers get unlimited calls and texts for free and the offer applies for up to five SIMs per household.

Sky Mobile will allow you to roll over any unused data for up to three years. This is a unique feature, with other providers limiting this sort of perk to just one month.

The plans – despite lasting for 12 months – will also be flexible and allow users to dial up or dial down data from month to month depending on how much they need.

As an extra incentive Sky TV customers will get free access to Sky Go Extra - which allows customers to sync their home TV planner with their smartphone and watch shows anywhere.

The perk, which usually costs £5, will be limited to Sky+ customers at first but Sky Q customers will also benefit soon after.

Sky won’t be offering handsets with its contracts just yet, but there are plans to offer handset and contract deals later this year.

How it compares

Sky Mobile’s offering is pretty uncompetitive when compared to other 4G SIM-only deals.

GiffGaff – which is also powered by O2’s network – is available on a 30-day rolling contract and comes with unlimited minutes, texts and data for just £20 a month.

Sky Mobile’s biggest data bundle only comes with 5GB of data for the same price – and that's for Sky TV customers. Everyone else has to pay £30.

Verdict

Sky Mobile’s deals really aren’t worth going for if you’re not a Sky TV customer.

There are plenty of providers offering unlimited calls and texts as standard and with more generous data allowances for much less.

If you're a Sky TV customer the offers are more competitive, but you could potentially get a better deal elsewhere, particularly if you're with them already.

For example, existing BT customers can get unlimited calls and texts as well as 15GB of data for just £16 a month.

However, the other perks like free access to Sky Go Extra and the ability to roll over unused data could be enough to swing the deal.

The best thing to do if you are looking for a new SIM-only deal is to shop around to compare prices and perks. You can check out the latest deals on Recombu.
