Cheapest supermarket Christmas dinner 2024: how Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Tesco & Waitrose compare

Updated on 10 December 2024 | 0 Comments

We compared prices on everything from turkey to mince pies to work out which was the cheapest supermarket for Christmas dinner.

As we get further into December, many of us are already planning the main event.

And with the past 12 months being tough on our finances, getting a good deal on our grocery shop is more important than ever.

But which supermarket offers the best value when it comes to Christmas dinner?

I’ve done a little digging and based on today’s prices,

Aldi came in as the cheapest option, with a total cost of £30.23 or £5.04 per person.

Waitrose was the most expensive, with a total cost of £58.25 or £9.71 per person.

A quick note on Lidl

As part of our research, we attempted to contact Lidl to confirm the price of Christmas veg.

However, we didn’t hear back on time for the publication of our article.

We will include Lidl’s offers as part of our weekly supermarket deals as soon as this information becomes available.

Cheapest Christmas dinner 2024: the maths

I’ve looked at all the ingredients you’d need for a fairly typical festive feast for six people, including turkey, festive veg, pigs in blankets and Christmas pud.

Where I haven’t found the exact same weight specified on our shipping list, I’ve included a note in brackets to provide the number of packs you'd need to feed you and your diners, even if it means leftovers.

To find out how each supermarket fared overall, check out the table below, which is ranked from the cheapest to the priciest Christmas dinner.

All prices were correct as of 6 December, 2024.

The cost per item

Here's how the various supermarket prices compare, just in case you want to go for individual items – the cheapest of each product is in bold.

I calculated the total cost for each supermarket shop by combining the prices of all the items and then divided by six to figure out the price per person.

In some cases, the price for loose vegetables was used if it was cheaper than the pre-packaged version.

In cases where a product is on an offer that is due to expire shortly, I’ve added a disclaimer to indicate this.

To avoid having to make the table too small, I’ve split it in two.

The Christmas price war

While all our prices are correct at the time of publication, it’s worth bearing in mind that most supermarkets start slashing their festive prices or launching special offers the nearer we get to Christmas.

During the past few years, roast veg in particular has significantly come down in the run-up to the 25th.

As part of our research, Sainsbury’s confirmed it will offer 15p on 1kg of potatoes and carrots from 18 until 24 December.

Aldi has also confirmed that it will cut the price of veg to 15p from 19 December.
