A fresh price battle has kicked off among the major UK supermarkets.
Four major supermarkets have entered into a fresh petrol price war.
Asda led the way by announcing it would cut its fuel prices by up to 2p a litre nationwide from tomorrow.
Motorists filling up at any of Asda’s 218 forecourts will pay no more than 130.7 pence per litre for unleaded or 134.7 pence per litre for diesel.
Not to be outdone, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco were quick to react and match the 2p reduction.
Fall in costs
Asda said it was making the move after a fall in the wholesale costs of unleaded and diesel.
The supermarket wanted to pass on the benefits to its customers across the country.
Andy Peake, Asda’s Petrol Trading Director said: “We’re giving our customers the opportunity to fill up their cars with lower priced fuel, putting much needed cash back in their pockets.
"Our national price cap benefits everyone across the country, meaning that no-one filling up at Asda will be forced to pay a premium for their fuel because of where they live.”
Good news
AA president Edmund King said drivers would welcome the news of fuel price reductions at the pumps, as the price of petrol and diesel both crept up by around 1p a litre last month.

In the AA’s latest June fuel price report unleaded prices stand at 134.6 pence per litre on average while diesel prices are on average 139.2 pence per litre. The price difference between the two fuels has fallen to 4.6 pence per litre.
Cheapest petrol
The latest price war among the supermarkets doesn’t guarantee you are getting the cheapest price on your petrol, so make sure you shop around.
