What Nectar points get you
Nectar points can be exchanged for a variety of rewards.
You can get money off treats, flights, day trips, restaurants, holidays and shopping through the scheme’s many partners.
Points are normally worth about 0.5p each, so every 500 points is normally worth £2.50. For example, every 500 Nectar points gets you £2.50 off a flight booking with EasyJet or a trip to Vue cinemas.
[SPOTLIGHT]But some partners offer more for your points. At Pizza Express 500 points converts into £3.75 off your meal.. And at LEGOLAND 500 points gets you a £5 voucher, double the normal value.
Other ways to boost Nectar points
Nectar is the UK’s biggest loyalty programme, which means there are lots of ways to earn points.
As well as shopping through selected partners online you can shop in affiliated stores like Sainsbury’s, BP, Oxfam and Homebase.
And you can even use a credit card to build up your points balance.
The American Express Nectar Credit Card, for example, allows you to earn up to four Nectar points for every £1 spent at Nectar-supported retailers and two Nectar points for every £1 spent elsewhere. Plus the card comes with the chance to earn 20,000 bonus Nectar points (equal to a £100 discount with most Nectar partners) when you spend £2,000 in the first three months. However, you’ll need to pay a £25 annual fee to get the card.
If you aren’t keen on paying a fee in order to earn rewards then there are two cards on offer from Sainsbury’s Bank that you could go for.
You can choose from the Sainsbury’s Bank Nectar Low Rate Card which comes with a low representative APR of 6.9% or the Sainsbury's Bank Nectar Credit Card which has a much higher 16.9% representative APR but also boasts 16 months 0% on balance transfers and purchases.
These both allow you to earn two Nectar points for every £1 spent in Sainsbury’s stores when you use your Nectar rewards card, and one Nectar point for every £5 spent elsewhere.
Alternatively if you have a big purchase coming up, the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold charge card, might be a better option.
With this card you’ll earn 20,000 American Express Membership Rewards points when you spend £2,000 within the first three months with the card. But not many people realise that these can be exchanged on a one-for-one basis for Nectar points. So you can get 20,000 Nectar points, giving you at least £100 to spend with Nectar partners.
The card normally charges a £125 annual fee, but this is being waived for the first year. Just remember as it’s a charge card rather than a credit card you will HAVE to pay off the balance in full each month.
You can also earn a load of Nectar points by signing up to an energy tariff at British Gas, getting medical insurance from PruHealth, buying your mobile phone from Mobile by Sainsbury’s as well as taking out certain other Sainsbury’s Bank products like its personal loans, car insurance, life insurance, home insurance and pet insurance.
Just make sure you shop around and compare deals so you’re not paying more than you need to just to earn Nectar points!
