American Express and Foursquare offer new cashback deals at high street shops and restaurants

Updated on 16 July 2014 | 0 Comments

Connect your American Express card to a Foursquare account and you can earn cashback at some big names.

American Express has launched a new series of cashback offers that cardholders can earn via location app Foursquare.

By 'syncing' your American Express card with a Foursquare account, you can get money back when you spend at a variety of shops and restaurants.

All you need to do is shop at some of the stores listed below. The offer will then be ‘loaded’ onto your synced card, and once you’ve spent, a credit will be added to your card account.

You can sync your card at this secure page.

Amex cards

If you don’t have an American Express card and this offer is making you think about getting one, you have several options.

If you'd like an interest-free period to spread the cost of one or more big items plus the chance to earn some more cashback, there's the American Express Platinum Cashback Exclusive card. This offers a 16-month period with no interest to pay with purchases, plus 1.25% cashback on every £1 you spend. There's an annual fee of £25 and the representative APR (the annual interest charges and fees you’ll pay if you don’t pay off your balance in full each month) is 18.7%.

[SPOTLIGHT]You can also earn cashback with the Platinum Cashback Everyday card, which pays 5% cashback on your first three months’ spending (up to a limit of £100, so the first £2,000 of spending). It then pays tiered levels of cashback from 0.5% up to 1.25% depending on how much you spend each month. The representative APR is 19.9%.

Or there's the Platinum Cashback card, which pays 5% on your first three months' spending up to a limit of £2,500, which could earn you £125. After that, it pays 1.25% on all purchases. However, there's a £25 annual fee to take into account. The representative APR is 18.7%.

If you collect Nectar points, the American Express Nectar card gives you up to four Nectar points for every £1 you spend at Nectar retailers and two points for spending elsewhere. At the moment, there’s also an introductory offer of 20,000 free Nectar points if you spend £2,000 in the first three months you have the account. There's a £25 annual fee, so the representative APR is 25%.

Meanwhile, the British Airways American Express card offers roughly one Avios for every £1 you spend on it. Spend £500 in the first three months and you’ll get 3,000 Avios. The representative APR is 15.9%.

If you’re a bigger spender or you’ve got a big purchase coming up, the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold charge card will give you 20,000 Amex Membership Reward points if you spend a minimum of £2,000 in the first three months. You can redeem these against flights, gifts, experiences and a host of other things. You can also transfer them to other reward schemes such as Nectar and Avios. Note that as this card is a charge card, you HAVE to pay off the balance in full each month. The card also normally carries a £125 a year fee, but Amex is currently waiving this for the first year.

It also applies to American Express cards issued by other providers, such as Lloyds Bank, TSB and MBNA.

If you don’t want to pay interest charges, which will quickly negate any money you make from cashback or reward points, make sure you set up a direct debit to pay off your balance in full each month.

And, needless to say, while the Foursqaure cashback offers are tempting, don’t spend more than you can afford just to get some money back.
