Standard Life launches drive to hand back £113 million of unclaimed assets

Over 70,000 eligible but time is running out to make a claim.

Standard Life is launching a fresh drive to reunite people with £113 million-worth of unclaimed assets, created from the demutualisation of The Standard Life Assurance Company in July 2006.

At the time 2.4 million policyholders were given an entitlement to cash or shares, but 280,000 failed to claim the windfall they were due. Since then Standard Life has worked to reunite over 200,000 with their assets, but 73,000 remain who have yet to make a claim.

The average amount those with unclaimed assets are likely to be entitled to is over £3,000, while the largest claim is thought to be over £120,000, depending on share price.

Entitlements are held in an Unclaimed Asset Trust, but this is due to close on 9th July 2016. After this date the assets will be returned to Standard Life plc.

How to claim

Standard Life has asked its registrars, Capita Asset Services, to run another tracing programme to attempt to contact anyone who hasn’t yet claimed ahead of the deadline.

Anyone who held a with-profits policy with The Standard Life Assurance Company that started before March 2004 and was in force in October 2005 may be eligible for an entitlement.

All those eligible should receive a letter from Capita outlining how to make a claim in the next few months. If you don’t hear anything but think you are entitled then you should get in contact with Capita or Standard Life Shareholder Services direct on 0845 113 0045 (8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday).
