Cost of a driving licence to fall from 31st October.
The cost of getting a driving licence is to fall from 31st October, following a public consultation by the Government.
Provisional licences will cost £34, down from £50 (£43 if done by post).
Online licence renewals are to fall from £20 to £14, saving drivers money when they renew every 10 years. The cost of postal renewals will fall to £17. 2.1 million photocard licences are renewed every year so existing motorists will save £63.1 million collectively over the next ten years.
Tachographs, used by businesses to monitor how far their employees are driving, will come down to £32 from £38.

How to renew your licence
If you've procrastinated a bit when it comes to renewing your licence, here's how you can do it:
Online
You can use your Government Gateway ID to renew your driving licence if you have a valid UK passport which has been issued in the past five years. You’ll need to pay the new £14 fee by debit or credit card and provide details of your previous addresses over the past three years as well as your National Insurance number.
[SPOTLIGHT]This will mean that your photo will be the same as the one on your previous licence. If you renew online, your licence will arrive within a week.
For those of you who don’t have a Government Gateway ID, you can register for one on the Gateway website.
At the Post Office
First, find an eligible Post Office at the Post Office website. From there, you’ll need fill in a D798 form and fork over an extra £4.50 processing fee as well as the new £17 renewal fee.
You can include a more up-to-date photo by renewing this way. Just pop in a new passport-style pic that’s been taken in the last month along with your D798 form, the paper counterpart of your current licence and a cheque or postal order for the £17 fee. It'll arrive within three weeks.

You should also update your licence when you change your name or when you move house. For the former, be sure to include original documents confirming your new name. There won’t be a fee for updating your licence.
However, there will be a £1,000 fine if you fail to update your licence when necessary.
