MasterCard's first Fare Free Friday on Friday 14th November was a huge success, with record numbers using the Underground. Not only is the promotion is on again this Friday (28th), but minicab app Kabbee has announced it's giving away free taxi journeys too with its own campaign, Tube Free Friday.
How Fare Free Friday works
If you have a contactless-payment enabled MasterCard or linked device you’ll be able to roam around London on Transport for London (TfL) services for free on Friday 28th.
The Fare Free Fridays promotion applies to journeys made by Tube, bus, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), overground, tram and participating national rail services.
You’ll need to have a contactless debit card, credit card or linked device issued by MasterCard to benefit from this promotion. However, you don't need to register the cards or devices to benfit,
To qualify for the refund, you just need to touch your contactless card or device on a yellow card reader at the start and end of each journey by tube, overground, DLR and participating National Rail services. On buses and trams you only need to touch in at the start of your journey.
[SPOTLIGHT]Fare Free Friday runs from 4.30am on Friday to 1am on Saturday. Your account will be charged but refunded up to 28 working days after you travel.
The cost of your journeys, capped at £21.80 per day, will then be refunded into your account.
How Tube Free Friday works
Impressed by the success of Fare Free Friday, minicab app Kabbee says it is giving away 100 free minicab journeys on Friday 28th. You just need to book using the code TGIF20.
Kabbee users will also earn double miles via the Kabbee Treats loyalty programme on Friday 28th.
Contactless on TfL
Contactless payments were first rolled out across the Transport for London (TfL) network in September.
Now travellers can touch their contactless-payment enabled credit or debit cards or other linked devices on yellow card readers to pay for their journeys instead of using an Oyster card.
Contactless payments work in the same way as the Oyster card, charging travellers an adult-rate, pay-as-you-go fare when they touch in and out on readers at the start and end of every journey.
Travellers using the service also benefit from having their fares capped for their contactless travel in a day or over a seven-day period from Monday to Sunday.
According to MasterCard more than eight million contactless journeys have been made since the technology was introduced.
