Supermarket nudges shoppers off its café tables.
Waitrose is tightening up the rules on its free tea or coffee offer for MyWaitrose members.
MyWaitrose members are entitled to a free hot drink every day, even if they do not spend anything in the store. However, the offer has evidently been abused, as Waitrose is now imposing some restrictions.
Buy a ‘treat’
From 9th February, MyWaitrose members who want to drink their free tea or coffee in a store café must also buy a ‘treat’ to go with their drink – for example, a sandwich, cake or piece of fruit.
[SPOTLIGHT]It has issued a short guide on "free tea and coffee etiquette". Members who don’t want to buy a treat can still get their free tea or coffee from self-service machines, but they will not be permitted to sit in the café. People buying hot drinks from the café itself will be welcome to do so.
As well as one hot drink per day, MyWaitrose members can also get a free newspaper (from a selected range of titles) if they spend at least £5 on weekdays or £10 at weekends.
