Last chance to spend your East Coast Rewards points

Updated on 29 September 2015 | 0 Comments

Passengers on the East Coast train line have just a matter of hours to spend their Rewards points.

If you travel on the East Coast main line, then today is your last chance to spend any Rewards Points you may have built up.

Travellers were able to earn Rewards Points when buying tickets on the franchise until the end of February, when Virgin Trains took over the franchise. At that point, the rewards scheme changed, with travellers now earning Nectar points or Virgin Flying Club miles when they book journeys through the Virgin Trains East Coast website.

However, travellers were given until midnight on 30th September to spend any remaining Rewards Points, so time is almost up.

But what can you spend your points on?

East Coast travel

Perhaps the most obvious thing to spend your points on is future travel on the East Coast line. You can redeem your points for train tickets, so long as you book your trip within the next six months.

A standard single ticket will set you back 255 points, though you can get four tickets for 920 points.

Alternatively, you can get eVouchers which can be cashed in when you book train tickets through the East Coast website, no matter which train company you use. You have to spend a minimum of 100 points, which gets you a £1 voucher.

If you don’t have many points left, but still want to put them towards improving your journeys, then 24 hours of on-board Wi-Fi will set you back 50 points, as will First Class Lounge access for one day.

Cinema tickets

You can exchange points for cinema tickets at Showcase, Cineworld and all sorts of independent cinemas.

One ticket will set you back 355 points.

Premium beers

Get your hands on a crate of real ales, craft beer, pilsners and lots more from the experts at Beer Hawk.

An eight-bottle crate will cost you 1,025 points, with bigger crates available all the way up to a 48-bottle crate for a whopping 4,100 points.

Books

[SPOTLIGHT]You can cash in your leftover points for a range of reading materials. A hardback Penguin book will cost you 570 points, while you can get a paperback version for 320 points or a kids book for 305 points.

House of Fraser

510 points can be converted into a £10 House of Fraser eGift voucher.

Flying Club Miles

Flying Club Miles can be used to cut the cost of flying with Virgin Atlantic. One reward point is worth six Flying Club Miles.

That won’t get you too far though – you need 35,000 Miles for a flight to New York, for example.

One of the best ways to build up Flying Club Miles is by using one of the Virgin Atlantic credit cards. For more on how they work, and how far they can get you, check out The best air mile credit cards.

East Coast passengers can now earn two Flying Club Miles for every £1 spent on tickets on the website.

Nectar points

You can convert one Reward point into six Nectar points. Generally 500 Nectar points are worth £2.50 in vouchers, so again your Reward points probably won’t go an awful long way.

Since the Reward scheme was closed, passengers have been able to earn two Nectar points for every £1 they spend on tickets.

Check out guide on How to boost your Nectar points.
