Same-day delivery from Argos: how does it compare to Amazon?

High street retailer launches same-day delivery service in time for Christmas. But how does it compare to Amazon's same-day delivery offering?

Argos has launched a new same-day delivery service called Fast Track Delivery, which is available seven days a week.

The retailer also offers a similar option for in-store collection, where you can order an item online before heading to your chosen store and collecting your order a little while later.

Argos same-day delivery costs

Same-day delivery from Argos will cost £3.95, the same price as regular delivery from the store. That's in stark contrast to other retailers, where you pay a premium for extra speedy delivery.

Orders must be placed before 6pm, and customers choose from one of four time slots for their delivery to take place. These are:

This means that an order placed really early in the morning could be organised to arrive before 10am, providing there are still delivery slots available when you order.

If you live or work near an Argos store though, save yourself four quid by popping in to collect your items in person with Fast Track In-Store Collection.

What can’t I get?

The service isn’t available for all items Argos stocks. You can only get Fast Track Delivery where items are stocked in stores, which means that if you’re after a large item like a fridge or an oven you’re out of luck.

If you are buying an item like that though, it’ll more than likely qualify for free delivery, including the weekends, which is helpful.

Delivery rivals

[SPOTLIGHT]Argos’ main competitor in the same-day delivery space is online giant Amazon. Customers who sign up to Amazon Prime can get one-hour delivery slots if they live in London, Birmingham, or some surrounding areas.

Prime costs £79 per year in subscription fees, and anyone wanting these one-hour slots must spend a minimum of £20 plus £6.99 in postage.

If you can wait a bit longer, Prime members are eligible for unlimited free one-day delivery slots.

Currys and PC World offer same-day delivery and next day evening slots at £9.99 a pop. This is only for small items though, such as TVs under 39”, computers and small kitchen appliances.

Larger white goods like fridges or washing machines can’t be delivered the same day, but you can get time-slot delivery seven days a week for these. This normally costs £19.99, but you can get free next day (non-time slot) delivery on online orders only.

Fashion retailer Next also provides a same-day delivery service for £4.99 on weekdays. Customers must order before midday from Monday to Thursday, or before 11am on Friday for the order to be arrive on the same day.
