Millions of TalkTalk customers' personal details at risk following cyber attack.
More than four million TalkTalk customers may have had their bank details stolen, after the firm suffered a “significant and sustained cyber attack”.
TalkTalk said that “there is a chance” that names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, email address, TalkTalk account information, credit card details and bank details have been compromised as a result.
TalkTalk admitted that not all of the personal data was encrypted. Once it realised that it had been attacked, the company took down its website. It is the third cyber attack on TalkTalk in the last year.
[SPOTLIGHT]The Metropolitan Police’s Cyber Crime Unit has now begun a criminal investigation.
Dido Harding, CEO of TalkTalk, said the firm takes any threat to the security of its customer’s data “extremely seriously”. She added: “As a precaution, we are contacting all our customers straight away with information, support and advice around yesterday’s attack.”
What should TalkTalk customers do?
TalkTalk says that it has contacted the major banks, so they will monitor customers’ accounts for any suspicious activity.
But you should keep a close eye on your bank statements too. If you see anything odd, immediately contact your bank and Action Fraud, the national fraud and internet crime reporting centre, on 0300 123 2040 or via its website.
It’s also a good idea to monitor your credit report, in case the fraudsters attempt to open new accounts in your name. You can compare credit agencies with loveMONEY. TalkTalk has said that it is hoping to organise a year’s free credit monitoring for all of its customers.
You should change your TalkTalk password immediately too, and any other accounts which use the same passwords.
