EU referendum vote extended: how to register or apply for a proxy ballot

The deadline to vote in this month's EU referendum has been extended. Find out how to register online or apply for a proxy vote – doing so might even boost your credit rating.

The deadline for registering to vote in the EU referendum has been extended to midnight tonight (June 9).

It was originally set to end at midnight on Tuesday, but a rush of last-minute registrations crashed the Government website that evening.

So if you are among those who couldn't log on then, make sure you do so as early as possible today.

How do I register?

UK citizens can register online and it should take about five minutes. Those living in the UK will need their National Insurance number, while those who have been living abroad for less than 15 years will need their passport number.

Voters in Northern Ireland should download and return this form to register.

Those who voted in last month’s local elections or last year’s General Election will already be registered if they live at the same address. Those who have moved will need to re-register.

If you’re unsure whether you’re registered contact your local electoral registration officeTo vote by proxy, fill in a separate application form and return it by 5pm BST on June 15.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote for the EU Referendum has already passed.

Boost your credit rating!

The Electoral Commission's latest figures estimate that 7.5 million people are incorrectly registered, potentially damaging their credit score.

Not registering to vote, being registered to vote at an old address or adding the wrong details on the electoral register could increase your chances of being refused credit in the future.

You might also struggle to get a passport, insurance, access legal and accountancy services or even apply for certain jobs.

Don’t take the risk: register to vote right now!
