Emma Roberts gives some great tips for saving money whilst saving the planet

Most of us are concerned about the environment want to do all we can to prevent global warming. But did you know that going green can save your money and the planet? Here, I’m going to take you through some simple green steps that’ll save your cash.

Heating and Water

The easiest way to dramatically cut the cost of your energy bills is to invest in some insulation for your home. Fitting cavity insulation could slice one-hundred-and-thirty pounds a year of your heating bills and having loft insulation could save you one-hundred pounds each year.

Turning down your thermostat by just one degree, saves you a massive thirty pounds each year and if you turn down your thermostat on your hot water to sixty degrees you’d be ten pounds a year better off.

Another top-tip is to replace the shower heads and taps that you use. Replacing them with low usage models, could save you a whopping two-hundred-and-twenty pounds off your annual water bill.

Electricity

Take care to switch off all electrical appliances, rather than leaving them on standby- this could save you eleven pounds a year.

If you use a washing machine, always wash at thirty degrees. This will save you ten pounds on your annual energy bill.

If you haven’t already, switch to energy saving light bulbs. Changing just one bulb in your home can cut your annual lighting costs by nine-pounds.

Other top tips

Just got a top upgrade on your mobile phone? Don’t throw your old one out! There are lots of websites that’ll offer you cash for your old handsets. Check out  Mazuma Mobile, where they recycle your old mobile and send you a cheque in the post.

An old favourite here at lovemoney.com is Freecycle, a website where you can donate your unwanted items. Not only does this mean that there’s less waste but it’s free!
