Cheap supermarkets: Aldi shoppers ‘save more than £8 per shop’

Updated on 17 August 2016 | 1 Comment

Aldi is ranked cheaper than Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons in new survey.

Shoppers save more than £8 on a basket of groceries when they shop at Aldi compared to rival stores, new research claims.

The Grocer analysed the cost of 33 common items and found the discount supermarket was 18% cheaper than its nearest rival Asda, and an astonishing £25 less than the same goods at Waitrose.

“Guest retailer Aldi scored a dominant victory in this week’s pricing survey… offering the cheapest price for 32 of the 33 items on our list,” the magazine says

Discount rival Lidl was excluded from the survey, but in numerous other surveys it has priced similarly to Aldi.

Asda best of the rest

[SPOTLIGHT] If the magazine hadn’t included Aldi as a guest retailer in its monthly survey Asda would have won amongst the traditional supermarkets. The 33 items costs £47.55 at Asda, £1.67 cheaper than Morrisons, which took third place.

However, the Grocer points out that as a result of the Asda Price Guarantee their mystery shopper was awarded a £2.37 voucher off her next shop as her bill wasn’t 10% cheaper than Asda’s competitors. This means the shop was even cheaper at Asda.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket in the survey with the basket of goods costing £64.40 at the luxury supermarket – almost £17 dearer than at Asda and £12 more than it’s nearest competitor Sainsbury’s.
