Sainsbury’s Chop Chop: supermarket trials one-hour delivery

Shopper can get up to 20 items delivered within the hour with Sainsbury’s Chop Chop app.

More than a century ago Sainsbury’s offered home delivery by bicycle to its customers.

The supermarket is now reviving bike deliveries as it aims to take on Amazon by offering delivery within the hour of purchase.

Customers living in Central London will be able to order up to 20 items of food from Sainsbury’s via its Chop Chop app, which you can download for free.

It will then be delivered within the hour by bicycle for a flat fee of £4.99.

The supermarket has been running a trial service from its Wandsworth store since June but from today (September 28) 35,699 more postcodes will be able to get one-hour delivery a the bike service is extended to its Pimlico store.

Regions now covered will include Chelsea, Westminster, Fulham, Battersea, Southwark, Wandsworth and Wimbledon.

Great for emergency or forgotten items

“This trial is part of our strategy to give our customers more options to shop with us whenever and wherever they want,” says John Rudoe, Sainsbury’s director of digital and technology.

“Speed of delivery is important to some customers, so we have brought back our bicycle service to test demand further.

“In Wandsworth customers are using the new one-hour delivery service to buy forgotten items, or emergency goods when they cannot leave their home, or have invited guests on the spur of the moment.”

Competing with Amazon

It is the first supermarket to offer within the hour delivery and is a clear attempt by to tackle competition from Amazon which started offering one-hour food delivery last year.

It’s Prime Now one-hour delivery service covers several major cities including Birmingham, London, Glasgow and Manchester.

Back in June Amazon launched Fresh Now, a one-hour grocery delivery service including fresh veg, fruit and meat in London and Surrey. Morrisons supplies the groceries for the service.

Tesco is also trialling same-day delivery in some areas but Sainsbury’s is the first supermarket to offer to get your groceries to you within the hour.
