Supermarket delivery charges
As if constantly changing product prices isn't confusing enough, complicated delivery pricing makes finding the best price for your trolley even trickier. Over the past few months, both Sainsbury's and Ocado have changed their delivery charges, making it very easy to fall into the trap of unwittingly booking an expensive slot.
The key to saving a few extra quid each week is spotting the cheapest slots and trying to fit your routine around them.
Tuesday and Wednesday are typically the least popular days for supermarket shopping -- so if you can switch to a midweek shop, you will only pay £3.99 at Tesco, as opposed to £5.99 on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. At ASDA you'll pay £3.75, rather than £4.25 for the rest of the week.
Spend over £70 at Sainsbury's and you can pay as little as £2.50 for delivery on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday -- which is normally £5/£6. And Ocado, offers certain delivery slots for free, if you spend over £75. ASDA also offers free delivery if you spend over £99 and use an ASDA credit card.
If your usual trolley comes close to these thresholds, think twice before you buy unwanted products just to reach the threshold -- the supermarkets are hoping that you'll get sucked into this. Rather, try to adjust your shopping habits so that you shop slightly less frequently but buy more items.
Delivery charges may vary slightly depending on where you live. One way to check the delivery charges for your area is by visiting the mySupermarket site. Pick your preferred delivery slot and you can check which supermarket will offer you the lowest delivery charge at that time.
