Top DIY & gardening bargains

Planning to spend the Easter holidays in the garden or doing a spot of DIY? Read this round-up of the top DIY and gardening bargains out there!

The long Easter weekend marks the beginning of the springtime gardening and DIY season -- a few days off work, when we can tackle all those jobs which will make for a more pleasurable summer.

And with the weather we’ve been having -- not to mention the forecast I’m looking at as I type these words -- it’s best to plan on a combination of indoors DIY and outdoor work in the garden.

So here’s a round-up of some of the best DIY and gardening deals out there at the moment.

The usual suspects

These days, B&Q has extensive stocks of both gardening and DIY products, and true to form, it’s not going to disappoint this Easter.

Its next day delivery service is holding a Home & Garden event offering free delivery when you spend over £50.  I was particularly attracted by this range of power washers at 25% off, and the store is also offering 15% a range of showers.

In-store, the deal of the month is a six-piece dining set -- a table, four chairs and a parasol, for only £54.98.

Homebase is another store to which most of us have ready access.  This weekend, there’s 20% off across a selection of lawnmowers -- reserve on-line and pick-up in-store -- plus a selection of offers on Dulux, Crown and Homebase’s own-label paints.

Amazon is increasingly a ‘must go’ destination for DIY and gardening deals, and this Easter has some stunning deals available across a whole range of garden and outdoor products.  Up to 35% off selected strimmers and shredders, for instance, as well as what it describes as ‘up to 34% off top-brand DIY tools’.

Study the offers carefully, though -- a good number of the prices on the screen that I’m looking at are offering even higher discounts.  There’s 47% off this Hitachi 14.4-volt combi-drill, for instance.

Dobbies Garden Centres are expanding fast, and also offer a mail order option with free delivery on orders over £50.  I liked the extensive range of garden benches, for instance, and in particular this 4-foot Eucalyptus wood bench for £88.99.

And don’t forget that the site has plenty of free ‘how to’ guides and garden projects to inspire you, too.  Here’s how to build your own garden pond, for example.

The supermarkets

Over at Lidl, it’s ‘DIY Essentials’ week, and it’s difficult to quibble with any of the prices of the products on offer.   If I didn’t already have one, I’d be tempted by this SDS Plus Hammer Drill for just £39.99, for instance.  Likewise the overalls at £8.99, or the DIY trousers at £6.99, complete with reinforced knees and multiple pockets.

And from Monday, Lidl are also having a ‘get ready for summer’ promotion, again stuffed with products at hard-to-beat prices.  There are trays of bedding plants at £1.99 per pack, hanging baskets at £2.99, and -- best of all -- fruit bushes at £3.49, including redcurrant, raspberry, gooseberry, blackberry and other fruit besides.

Aldi have some interesting offers too.  Here’s a telescopic tree lopper, for instance, for £7.99, masonry paint for £5.99, and -- for just £5.99 -- a very handy garden kneeler, complete with storage compartment.

Sainsbury’s, meanwhile, is offering this handy-looking garden shed for just £186.75, a saving of £62.25, as well as some good deals on garden chairs to sit in after you’ve finished erecting it.  There’s ‘buy one, get one free’ on these chairs, for instance.

Over at Tesco, which also advertises free delivery on expenditure over £50, I was struck by this set of a hardwood table and six chairs for £130, as well as this attractive hardwood bar set for outdoor entertaining.  At £99.99, that’s quite a saving on the original price of £199.99.

And on the DIY front, Tesco are offering 25% off selected flooring and wallpaper until 14 April: take a look at this cottage oak laminate flooring.  They also have a number of clearance offers on bathroom suites: this Milano 1TH Granada suite is down from £832 to £379, for example.

Asda, meanwhile, have a host of great deals on offer this weekend.  This garden shed for £225 caught my eye, as did this shed lock and security kit reduced from £19.99 to £14.99.

On the DIY front, Asda also have a clearance sale: I liked this Black & Decker angle grinder reduced from £40 to £25.  They’re a very handy tool -- once you’ve got one, it’s surprising how many uses you find for it!

Elsewhere…

Suttons Seeds have a ‘10% off all seeds’ promotion for Easter, which soon adds up to a hefty saving, given the price of seeds these days.  And for one week only, bedding plants are on offer at less than half price.  There’s also a deal where they’re offering potted bay trees at less than half price with every order -- normally £21.95, they’re on sale at just £10.

Screwfix are every DIYers first port of call for those obscure tools and hardware items that the local stores don’t seem to carry, and they too are having a sale: an end-of-catalogue clearout with dozens of great gardening and DIY deals.

This Makita 18-volt combi-drill is reduced from £199.99 to just £79.99, for instance, and there’s also a matching 101-piece accessory kit on offer at £19.99, instead of the usual £49.99.

Finally, back on the gardening front, I’ve always found Garden4Less to be well-stocked and with keen prices, thanks to a price-matching offer.

Like Screwfix, they’re a good port of call for quality hard-to-find items, and have a good stock of spare parts, too.  Take a look at the pricing and service backup on these Felco secateurs, for instance -- some of which are on offer at 30%.  Just the thing to get the garden shipshape for summer!
